Happy 75th Birthday to the 45 RPM single. They were first issued by RCA Victor in the US on 31 March 1949 with the following colour-coded scheme:

Popular releases were pressed up on standard black vinyl, with folk (including hillbilly music) on “grass green”-coloured vinyl. Children’s were on “lemon drop yellow” and classical on “ruby red”. R&B and gospel, which at the time were referred to in the industry as ‘race records’ and by RCA in particular as “blues & rhythm” or “sepia” music , came out on bright orange “cerise” vinyl. Light classical music ‒ Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ would be an example ‒ had “midnight blue” vinyl and a ”rocket blue” label, while international music could be found on “sky blue” vinyl with an accompanying black label.
