Passengers missing after Juba-Bor Highway attack

Unspecified numbers of passengers are missing after their vehicle was hijacked by armed men along the Juba-Bor highway on Sunday, authorities have said.

Authorities in Jonglei State Capital, Bor, said yesterday, the passengers were travelling from Juba to Bor.

Bor Municipal Council Mayor John Matiop Achiek, said security threats and attacks have recently been reported around Bor town and along the roads connecting the town to neighboring areas.

Mayor Achiek said his office and security agents were investigating the Juba-Bor road incident.

“We have a threat now in Bor town. Like now, for us here, we are doing road construction, and there are trucks that go to the side of Mareng, and they find a lot of our brothers from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area—they are very many in the bush,” Achiek told Radio Tamazuj.

Mayor Achiek says the Juba-Bor road is a vital economic lifeline to residents of Jonglei State, and should therefore be devoid of threats from armed groups.

“On behalf of Bor Municipal Council and on behalf of people in town, I am calling on those people to allow our citizens to move freely,” Achiek added.

Jonglei State Police Commissioner, Major General Elia Kosta Faustino, said investigations are ongoing and raised concerns about the latest space of attacks on around Bor town.

“There is rumor that there are some people moving around Bor town here and we are following them. We heard it yesterday that is was on the side of Mangala. We don’t know what happened there but they said that some people stopped the car there. People must be careful; we cannot stop people from moving but let them be careful. Let them call police for rescue in case of anything,” General Kosta told Radio Tamazuj.

General Kosta said the security personnel are committed to protecting the lives and properties of the people, and to ensure the rule of law is upheld.

President Kiir officiates swearing-in ceremony of members of National Election Commission

Juba, 8th January 2024-- President Salva Kiir Mayardit has urged the National Election Commission to work around the clock to prepare the country for elections.

President Kiir was speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of members of the newly reconstituted National Election Commission and Hon. Michael Makuei Lueth as a member of National Constitutional Review Commission on Monday.

The Chairperson of the National Election Commission, Prof. Abednego Akok Kachuol said the Commission will embark on civic education across the country to achieve a peaceful, fair, credible and transparent elections.

According to the peace Roadmap, South Sudan is expected to hold general elections in December 2024.

President Kiir meets Advisor Kuol on introduction of farming technology in Jonglei

Juba, January 5, 2024 – President Salva Kiir Mayardit met with Senior Presidential Advisor Kuol Manyang Juuk on Friday to discuss the establishment of a pilot rice farm at Dr. John Garang Memorial University of Science and Technology in Bor, Jonglei State.

The initiative is a collaboration between the university and South Korean Engineering contingent within UNMISS, aimed at introducing farming technology to diversify agricultural production with rice, besides sorghum.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has written a letter to his Kenyan counterpart William Ruto to mediate peace talks between the government of South Sudan and the hold-out groups who are non-signatories to 2018 peace agreement as the country goes to polls in 2024.

The Minister of Presidential Affairs Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro confirmed this to SSBC in Juba on Monday.

The man gets the gun, pointed it at his wife but hesitated. He is thinking of what he has gone through in life with his wife and how she has suffered and sacrificed for him. He hands back the gun and says, “I am sorry I can’t do this…“

The boss of the robbers silently grabbed the gun from him and passed it on to the wife to kill her husband. The wife took the gun and without any single hesitation, pointed to her husband’s head and pulled the trigger. But at last, the gun had no bullets in it. The robbers got their gun and walked out of the house laughing.
