Opinion : The Assassination of Major General Majur Dak: A Hidden Plot Uncovered

By;Karbino Kiir Goch

Confidential information from classified documents within the Billpam headquarters has revealed shocking details about the assassination of Major General David Majur Dak. Contrary to the widely accepted narrative that his death resulted from clashes between the IO/White Army militia and the SSPF, the truth is far more sinister. While confrontations did occur, they were merely a cover for a premeditated plot. The pressing question remains: Why did the IO leadership want Majur Dak dead?

Who Was Major General Majur Dak?

Majur Dak had a long history in Nasir, dating back to before South Sudan’s independence and even before 2005. He was one of the few commanders who successfully expelled Khartoum’s Arab forces from the region. Having lived among the Nuer for an extended period, he mastered their language, understood their customs, and built strong relationships with their traditional leaders. Unlike many high-ranking SPLM/A officers, Majur was not afraid to engage with notorious Nuer warlords. His deep ties and influence among the Nuer made him a key figure in bridging gaps between the community and the government.

Despite the Nuer being perceived as a volatile and war-prone ethnic group, Majur Dak held a different perspective. He believed that the real issue was not the Nuer youth themselves but the leaders who exploited their vulnerability for political gain. He advocated for policies that would weaken the grip of these self-serving leaders over the youth. His proposal included ensuring direct government support to traditional leaders—offering them monthly salaries rather than the meager food rations and weapons that warlords used to maintain their loyalty.

Furthermore, Majur had conducted an in-depth study on the Nuer community, which he intended to present to the government. His findings outlined a strategy to sever the ties between traditional leaders and political manipulators, thereby dismantling the influence of power-hungry elites over the Nuer youth. This initiative threatened the IO leadership’s long-standing control over the Nuer, making Majur a target.

How the Plot Unfolded

Once the IO intelligence within the government and J1 learned of Majur Dak’s plans, they moved swiftly to eliminate him. On the day of his death, Majur contacted the commissioner of Nasir, informing him that he had been wounded and was in the trenches. He also revealed that he had spoken directly with Riek Machar multiple times, with Machar himself arranging for a UN plane to evacuate him to Malakal. However, the commissioner—who appeared to be spying on him—was aware that the IO and the White Army were actively hunting him down.

When the UN plane arrived, Majur was left behind, supposedly to be taken on a second flight. However, before he could board, he was shot and killed. His death was not the result of an unplanned attack by angry, misinformed youth fearing disarmament. Instead, it was a well-coordinated assassination, ensuring that he would never make it to Juba to expose the IO leadership’s manipulative tactics.

Aftermath and Cover-Up

Following Majur Dak’s assassination, the government apprehended high-profile IO figures involved in the plot. The IO leadership in Juba has since distanced itself from the White Army, denying any affiliation and insisting that they are civilians rather than an armed militia under IO control. However, the circumstances surrounding Majur’s death expose the deep-rooted deception at play.

A Tragic Loss for South Sudan

Major General Majur Dak was not just another military officer; he was a visionary leader who sought to liberate the Nuer youth from political exploitation and build a stable, prosperous South Sudan for all ethnicities. His assassination was a calculated move to silence him before he could bring about real change. In the end, the very community he sought to uplift was used against him by the same leaders who have kept South Sudan in turmoil for decades.

Rest in peace, Major General David Majur Dak. Your dream for a better South Sudan will not be forgotten.
