We are proud to share the announcement of our Founding Partner Mrs Hulya Aslantas, as the interim VP of Skål International.

The announcement of the Skål International President Ms. Burcin Turkkan;

As you know, the Skål International Executive Board 2022 currently has one seat available due to the recent 2021 AGM election results. In the two elections conducted, the votes for the second candidate for the Vice President position remained below %50+1. As a result, immediate Past-President Bill Rheaume had communicated that the 2022 Executive Committee would convey an Extraordinary General Meeting.

However, at a January 13th meeting, the Skål International Executive Committee did not find grounds to support Past-President Bill Rheaume proposal and, hence, voted down unanimously the possibility to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting to conduct additional elections.

Following this decision the Executive Committee, based on our Statutes and By-Laws, decided to make a temporary appointment to the Skål International Executive Committee for the year 2022, as the Executive Board needs full assistance to achieve the goals for the year.

After a long review, considering her past accomplishments as Skål International President and her continuing active involvement in the global travel and tourism industry, I have decided to propose Past-President & Florimond Volckaert Fund Trustee Hulya Aslantas to be invited as the interim Vice President to the Skål International Executive Committee.

The majority of the Skål International Executive Committee agreed with the motion and Past-President Hulya Aslantas has honored to accept the invitation.

Hulya will join the Executive Committee effective immediately with portfolio responsibilities for the Technology, Innovation and Special Projects.

We welcome Past-President Hulya Aslantas back to the Executive Committee and look forward to sharing her experience and engagement.

European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) has nominated Istanbul as a candidate for the best destinations in Europe.

Among the candidates are Istanbul, as well as England's London, Italy's Rome and Amalfi Coast, Greece's Athens and Crete, Austria's Vienna and Graz, Germany's Bavaria, Germany's Nijmegen, Czechia's Prague. The cities of Amiens and Marbella in Spain, Leuven in Belgium, Lucerna in Switzerland, Lathi in Finland, Clonakilty in Ireland, Ljubljana in Slovenia and Oradea in Romania are nominated as candidates.

The winner will be announced in the evening of the same day.

EDEN has been selecting the best tourism destinations in Europe since 2009.

Last year, Cappadocia of Turkey was nominated to the list, and the winner was Braga from Portugal.

The annual report of Airports Council International (ACI) Europe suggests that Istanbul Airport is named the busiest airport in Europe in the year 2021, with almost 37 million passengers. Istanbul airport welcomed 36,988,563 passengers in 2021, followed by Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport with 30,943,456 passengers, Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport with 26,201,698 passengers, and Amsterdam-Schiphol and Moscow-Domodedovo making in the top five.

Last year, despite the pandemic limitations, Istanbul Airport ranked top among European airports by passenger volume in 2020, with more than 20 million passengers. In 2019, Istanbul Airport took over as the new hub for Turkish Airlines (THY), replacing the old Atatürk Airport. Istanbul's other airports, Sabiha Gökçen, and Antalya Airport of the Mediterranean resort city Antalya ranked seventh and ninth.

Turkish national athlete Ayşe Begüm Onbaşı won the gold medal at the Aerobic Gymnastics World Championship held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

Anadolu Efes Becomes Euroleague Champion Under the management of Ergin Ataman, Anadolu Efes made history in Europe... Defeating CSKA Moscow 89-86 in the first match of the Final Four held in Cologne, Germany, Anadolu Efes defeated Barcelona 86-86 in the final. Anadolu Efes thus became the second Turkish team to win the EuroLeague championship after Fenerbahçe. Ergin Ataman became the first Turkish coach to win the Euroleague championship.

Turkish national basketball player Alperen Şengün was selected in the 16th place in the American Basketball League (NBA) 2021 draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

2020 Tokyo Olympics Archery In archery, our 22-year-old athlete Mete Gazoz won the first archery medal in our Olympic history as a champion.

Busenaz Sürmeneli became the first champion boxer in Turkey's Olympic history with the gold medal she won in boxing, which Turkey participated for the first time in women.

Buse Naz Çakıroğlu won the silver medal, winning the first Olympic medal in women's boxing.

Ferhat Arıcan won Turkey's first gymnastics medal in Olympic history with the bronze medal he won in the parallel bars.

In wrestling, Turkey's Rio 2016 Olympic Champion Taha Akgül finished the Games with a bronze medal in 125 kg freestyle.
Greco-Roman 130 kg wrestler Rıza Kayaalp, who won the bronze medal in London 2012 and the silver medal in Rio 2016, managed to win the bronze medal in Tokyo 2020.

Yasemin Adar, on the other hand, became the owner of the bronze medal, which is Turkey's first Olympic medal in women's wrestling.
Eray Şamdan won the silver medal in Karate Men's kumite -67 kg.

Uğur Aktaş in +75 kg kumite, Ali Sofuoğlu in kata and Merve Çoban in women's kumite -61 kg won the bronze medal. Hatice Kübra İlgün in taekwondo 57 kg and Hakan Reçber in men's -68 kg managed to win the bronze medal.

Participating in the Olympics for the second time after London 2012, Turkey's women's national team in volleyball made it to the quarter-finals for the first time.

Goalball Women's National Team became the Paralympic champion for the second time in a row. Having won the gold medal in women's golf in Rio 2016, Turkey also won the championship by beating the USA in the final in Tokyo.

Abdullah Öztürk won the gold medal in the men's class 4 category. Nesim Turan in men's class 4, Ali Öztürk in class 5 and Kübra Korkut in women's class 7 won bronze medals. Turkey's most successful branch in Tokyo was table tennis with 4 medals.

Sevilay Öztürk won the bronze medal in the women's 50 meters backstroke S5 category in swimming at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games, bringing Turkey the first medal in its history in this branch.

Nihat Türkmenoğlu won the silver medal in the men's roller bow W1 category, Bahattin Hekimoğlu won the bronze medal, and Öznur Cüre-Bülent Korkmaz duo won the silver medal in the roller bow mixed team.

In judo, Recep Çiftçi won the bronze medal in men's 60 kg and Zeynep Çelik in women's 57 kg.

In taekwondo, Meryem Çavdar wore the silver medal in women's K44 class 49 kg and Mahmut Bozteke bronze medal in men's K44 class 61 kg.

Turkey won the silver medal with Ayşegül Pehlivanlar in the women's 10 meter air pistol P2 class in shooting.

She experienced the joy of bronze medal with Besra Duman in weightlifting 55 kilograms.
Turkey defeated the Netherlands 3-0 and won the bronze medal in the European Women's Volleyball Championship.

Amputee National Team Became European Champion. Our Amputee Football National Team defeated Spain 6-0 in the final of the European Championship and became the champion for the second time in a row. We congratulate all our athletes and wish them continued success.

Last but not least, Turkish National pool player Semih Saygıner captured his 7th championship at the 3-Cushion World Cup held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Semih Saygıner became the champion at the 3-Cushion World Cup, held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, between November 28 and December 4 with the participation of 145 athletes from 25 countries.
