For the next two years, Depp did not act in films, except for a brief episode in A Nightmare on Elm Street 6: Freddie Is Dead (1991), the sixth installment in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. In 1993, he starred in three films. 1990–2002: Independent films and first collaborations with Tim Burton
Frustrated with his role as a teen idol on the television series 21 Jump Street, Depp began to play roles that were more interesting to him, and not those that, in his opinion, could become successful at the box office [25]. His first film, released in 1990, was John Waters' musical comedy Cry-Baby, set in the 1950s. Although the film was not a box office success[26], over the years it has gained the status of a cult classic[27]. Also in 1990, Depp played the title character in Tim Burton's romantic fantasy Edward Scissorhands, alongside Dianne Wiest and Winona Ryder. Although Depp said that he "had no desire to be an actor", he continued to act in films[22], earning enough to cover some of the bills his music career had left unpaid[21]. After starring in the 1985 comedy Private Resort, Depp was invited by the film's director to star in the 1986 drama Clash, but the producer overruled the decision[23][24]. Instead, Depp starred in a supporting role as a Vietnamese-speaking private in Oliver Stone's 1986 drama Platoon. At 20, Depp moved to Los Angeles with his band. After the band broke up, Depp's then-wife Laurie Ann Ellison introduced him to actor Nicolas Cage. After they became drinking buddies, Cage encouraged him to take up acting[19]. Depp became interested in acting after reading a biography of James Dean and watching the movie Rebel Without a Cause. Cage helped Depp audition for Wes Craven for A Nightmare on Elm Street; Depp, who had no acting experience, said that he "got into acting by accident"[21][22]. Partly due to the fact that he attracted the attention of Craven's daughter, Depp got the role of the boyfriend of the main character, one of the victims of Freddy Krueger [13].

This became especially noticeable towards the end of the 19th century[32]:186. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the term "Ukraine" as the name of the entire ethnic territory became completely independent and self-sufficient, displacing other self-names that have since been used only at the regional level[32]:186. During the struggle of the Ukrainian national movement in the 1920s, in connection with the Bolshevik policy, indigenization and Ukrainization began[33][34].

The geographical, rather than ethnic, connection of this concept is demonstrated by the fact that the Polish gentry serving in these territories were also called Ukrainians[30]. The number of Ukrainians gradually increased, and the name "Ukraine" spread to regions beyond the original territory. During the Khmelnitsky uprising, it began to apply to the entire territory where hostilities took place. The concept was used in written sources and in works of oral folk art; Bohdan Khmelnitsky himself and his successors used it[28].

Thus, in the 16th-18th centuries, "Ukraine" becomes the name of a specific geographical region among the names of other historical and ethnographic regions (Volyn, Podolia, Pokuttya, Severshchina, Chervonaya Rus, Zaporozhye). It is assigned to the Middle Dnieper region (Southern Kiev region and Bratslav region) - the territory controlled by the Cossacks[28]. The inhabitants of this territory began to be called Ukrainians or Ukrainians[29].

As reported in the dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron, after South-Western Russia entered the Polish Crown in 1569, part of its territory stretching from Podolia in the west to the mouth of the Dnieper (“Ochakovsky field”) in the south and including a large part of the lands of the future Yekaterinoslav province in the east, became in this state unofficially referred to as "Ukraine"[27]. This was due to the border location of these territories in the Polish state.
