Music is one of the oldest disciplines in the liberal arts, and thus represents of the traditional fields of knowledge. Integration with other disciplines is represented well within the department, for music brings people in contact with great literature such as drama and poetry, with dance, with historical and sociological trends, and with religious and philosophical ideas. One of the most import

ant contributions provided by the Music Department is the opportunity for self-expression, either individually or with others. The stimulation and enjoyment derived from music springs from study, self-examination and criticism, discipline, knowledge of other disciplines that bear upon musical interpretation, and a desire to achieve excellence. These are liberating, civilizing, sensitizing influences upon humanity in any day and in any place; they help prepare students for rich and rewarding lives. The philosophy and mission of Albion College are reflected in four primary goals of the Music Department: (1) To be an artistic presence on the campus and to share the rich heritage of great music with students, faculty, and community; (2) To expose students to and involve them with the creative process through music, to heighten students’ sensitivity to themselves and others, and to introduce them to a broad range of significant music; (3) To develop an understanding of music, impart knowledge of music and increase musical skills by means of courses offered within the framework of the liberal arts; (4) To provide courses and curricula for music majors so that they may have the necessary foundation for graduate study, teaching, performing, or other career-oriented goals.

The Albion College Symphony Orchestra, Concert Choir, and Briton Singers will present a concert this Sunday, February 23, at 4:00 pm in Goodrich Chapel. The concert will feature several combined works for choir and orchestra, including “Brainstorm” by David L. Brunner in its world-premiere orchestration by Albion Alum Luke Rivard, ‘24. Over 50 high school students will be on campus this Friday, February 21 for the annual High School Honor Band. The day will culminate in a concert at 7:30 pm, also featuring the Albion College Wind Ensemble. This concert is free and open to the public.

The Department of Music welcomes ****la for a concert in Goodrich Chapel on Friday, February 7 at 7:30 pm. This concert is presented free of charge as part of the David L. Strickler Endowed Concert Series.

Chicago a ca****la was created in 1993 with the vision of bringing together a small group of fiercely talented singers to celebrate every genre of music imaginable with equal passion and commitment. The ensemble has released 10 recordings, including its latest, Miracle of Miracles on the Cedille Records label. The group has been featured on the nationally-broadcast radio series Performance Today over 30 times and has made dozens of tour appearances throughout the
U.S. and Mexico.

The Symphony Orchestra will perform this Sunday, November 17, at 4:00 pm in Goodrich Chapel. The concert, entitled “Deep Underground,” will take listeners on a musical journey from Aaron Copland’s folk-inspired melodies and William Herschel’s classical symphony to Roger Zare’s quantum physics-inspired premiere, composed during his Fermilab residency. “Deep Underground” showcases the fascinating interplay between scientific discovery and musical innovation. The 16th Annual Albion College Piano Festival will take place this weekend, from November 1st to 3rd. All events are in Goodrich Chapel.

The Festival kicks off on Friday night at 7:30pm with a recital featuring our guest artists, Dr. Immanuela Gruenberg and Dr. Hamilton Tescarollo.

On Saturday and Sunday, talented pre-college pianists will compete for prizes in a piano competition and play in private lessons with our piano faculty and master classes with our two guest artists.

Founded by Drs. Lia Jensen-Abbott and David Abbott, this festival is dedicated to the goal of supporting and inspiring young late elementary pianists through advanced performance levels.

The program will include two Georgian choral pieces, orchestral works by Aaron Copland and William Herschel, jazz tunes from Duke Ellington and Arturo Sandoval, and more!
