Music is one of the oldest disciplines in the liberal arts, and thus represents of the traditional fields of knowledge. Integration with other disciplines is represented well within the department, for music brings people in contact with great literature such as drama and poetry, with dance, with historical and sociological trends, and with religious and philosophical ideas. One of the most important contributions provided by the Music Department is the opportunity for self-expression, either individually or with others. The stimulation and enjoyment derived from music springs from study, self-examination and criticism, discipline, knowledge of other disciplines that bear upon musical interpretation, and a desire to achieve excellence. These are liberating, civilizing, sensitizing influences upon humanity in any day and in any place; they help prepare students for rich and rewarding lives. The philosophy and mission of Albion College are reflected in four primary goals of the Music Department: (1) To be an artistic presence on the campus and to share the rich heritage of great music with students, faculty, and community; (2) To expose students to and involve them with the creative process through music, to heighten students’ sensitivity to themselves and others, and to introduce them to a broad range of significant music; (3) To develop an understanding of music, impart knowledge of music and increase musical skills by means of courses offered within the framework of the liberal arts; (4) To provide courses and curricula for music majors so that they may have the necessary foundation for graduate study, teaching, performing, or other career-oriented goals.

We have two exciting concerts coming up this Homecoming Weekend! The first will be on Friday, October 2 at 7:30 pm, featuring bass trombonist Randall Hawes and pianist Kathryn Goodson. The concert will honor Mr. Hawes’ late step-grandfather Dr. Conway Peters, Albion College Music professor from 1934-1955. Pieces from Michigan composers will be showcased along with music from France, Germany, Russia, and other countries.

We are proud to present the Fall Faculty Recital this Sunday, September 27 at 4:00 pm. The program will feature performances from trombonist Korie Brewer, soprano Anna Hart, trumpeter Matthew Kay, pianist Nicholas Laban, saxophonist Alex Lee, clarinetist Elizabeth Rodeck, and soprano Jenny Ribeiro.

The recital will showcase a wide range of repertoire. Classic opera arias by Verdi and Weber will be featured alongside a stunning setting of Ave Maria and Amazing Grace for two sopranos. On the instrumental side, there will be a mix of Romantic and contemporary pieces by Alice Mary Smith, Jean-Michel Defaÿ, JoAnne Harris, and Dana Wilson.

Join us this Friday, September 25 at 7:30 pm as we present a special Guest Artist recital in Goodrich Chapel. Three Essential Elements, Inc., an international partnership of composers, performers, and listeners dedicated to live performances of new, audience-friendly classical music, will present a concert of ten world-premiere violin and piano duets.

Violinist John Irrera and pianist Shannon Wettstein will perform the program of newly composed works by contemporary composers representing eight nations: England, France, Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, and the United States. Each piece lasts under seven minutes, offering accessible yet sophisticated music that balances evocative melodies, atmospheric depth, and artistic craftsmanship. Titles include Waltz and Elegy, Air and Rondo, Sérénade à l’aube d’un jour nouveau, Night Songs, Lamento, Dialogues, Romantic Sonata, Partita Breve, Sonata for Violin & Piano, and Duet for Violin and Piano. The collection spans tender lyricism, spirited dance, introspective lament, and vibrant dialogue, delivering music of feeling that resonates emotionally without requiring explanation.

We are back for a new school year and thrilled to invite you to our first concert of the fall, coming up on Sunday, September 13 at 7:30 pm. Our cello instructor Dr. Jinhyun Kim will be joined by pianist Dr. Aran Kim for a recital featuring works by Bach, Brahms, and Ginastera. This concert is free and open to the public.

The piano students of Dr. David Abbott will showcase the repertoire they have been working on this semester. There will be pieces by Chopin, Debussy, Ravel, Kabalevsky, Beethoven, and more!
