Old Fashioned Sour Cream Cut-Out Cookies

Ingredients
• 1/2 cup butter flavored shortening
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 1 large egg
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 2 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
• 1/2 cup sour cream

Instructions
Sour Cream Cookie Dough
1. In a large bowl beat the shortening and sugar until smooth. Blend in the egg and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix all of the dry ingredients.
2. Blend in the dry ingredients into the eggs alternately with the sour cream, being sure not to overwork the dough.
3. IMPORTANT: Refrigerate the dough covered with cling wrap overnight, or at least a couple of hours.

Baking Cut Out Cookies
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
2. Place half of the dough on floured surface. Press the dough out with your floured hands. Use a flour coated rolling pin to roll the dough out evenly to about 1/8 inch thickness.
3. Coat your cookie cutters with flour and cut out as many shapes as you can. Using a flour coated spatula, carefully transfer the cookies to parchment lined or non-stick baking sheets.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 with the other half of dough. Don't waste the scraps of dough! Ball them up with your hands and roll them out for more cookies. (These cookies won't have quite as soft of texture as they get slightly overworked, but are still very good.)
5. Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes at 350°F or until just very slightly golden brown on the edges. Keep a close eye on the cookies, because you want them a beautiful light color for the best texture.
6. Allow the cookies to completely cool on cooling racks before frosting. Store in an air-tight container.

Gingerbread cookies are a must for the holidays, and these spiced gingerbread men have a festive taste that doesn't disappoint!
INGREDIENTS -
½ cup margarine, softened
½ cup white sugar
1 large egg yolk
½ cup molasses (not blackstrap)
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, or to taste
½ teaspoon ground cloves, or to taste
½ teaspoon ground ginger, or to taste
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, or to taste

DIRECTIONS -
Beat margarine and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer on low speed until mostly incorporated. Increase speed to medium-high and beat until light and fluffy (2 - 3 minutes). Beat in egg yolk, then molasses.
Whisk sifted flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg in a separate bowl until well combined. Gradually add flour mixture to the molasses mixture, beating until well blended and smooth.
Divide dough in half and form each into a 1-inch-thick disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 to 3 hours, or overnight.
When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

Working with one disk at a time, and leaving remaining disk in the refrigerator, unwrap chilled dough and place on a lightly floured surface. Working from the center to the edges, roll dough with a floured rolling pin to a thickness of 1/4 inch.

Cut dough into desired shapes with cookie cutters, dipping the cutters into flour as needed so they don't stick to the dough. Fit the cookie cutters as closely together as possible to cut as many cookies as you can.
Transfer gingerbread cookies to ungreased cookie sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart. Gather any dough scraps into a ball, flatten, re-wrap with plastic wrap, and refrigerate to use for later batches.
Bake each sheet in the preheated oven until firm, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool.
Frost or decorate cooled gingerbread cookies as desired.

NOW IS THE TIME TO PLANT BULBS FOR SPRING!!
For a naturalized, "Mother Nature" look rather than straight rows, toss bulbs into the prepared planting area randomly. Dig the holes and plant the bulbs where they fell. Tulips, daffodils, hyacinth, and more bulbs should be planted in the fall for spring blooms.

Birdseed Ornaments --
These birdseed ornaments are SO EASY to make and they look gorgeous on the trees outside!
Materials --
• 2.5 cups Birdseed (choose your favorite mix)
• 2 Packages Unflavoured Gelatin (2 Tablespoons total)
• 2 Tablespoons Corn Syrup
• 1 cup Water
• 10-12 Cookie Cutters
• Drinking Straws cut into 2" long pieces
• Twine or ribbon
Instructions --
Add 1/2 cup cold water to a large bowl. Pour the 2 packages of unflavoured gelatin on top of the water. Add 1/2 cup boiling water to the gelatin mixture and stir until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Add the corn syrup and stir until combined; then stir in the birdseed until all is well combined. Place the bowl in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes until the liquid firms up enough that it won't leak out from under the cookie cutters. Once birdseed mixture is thickened, set your cookie cutters onto a parchment lined baking sheet and fill them with spoonfuls of the birdseed mixture. Using the back of a spoon, press down the birdseed mixture firmly to fill in all the gaps. Fill the cookie cutters to the top and smooth level.
Press the drinking straws into each of the shapes leaving at least 1/2" of space between the hole and the edge of the shape. Place the ornaments in the refrigerator overnight.
To remove the cookie cutters, gently pull the metal away from the edges on all side then gently push the birdseed ornaments out of the cookie cutters. Gently pull the straws out.
Thread a piece of twine or ribbon through the hole and tie the ends in a knot. Hang the birdseed ornaments from tree branches, leaving room nearby for the birds to perch on while eating.
Notes --
When you place the mixture in the refrigerator, right after you've added the gelatin to the birdseed, make sure you don't keep it in the fridge for too long.
If any of the gelatin "breaks" when you stir it, you need to microwave the whole bowl to melt it and try again. The birdseed/gelatin mixture needs to be thickened slightly in the fridge until it has the consistency of a thick syrup. If the gelatin is set more than that before you spoon it into the cookie cutters, the ornaments will end up being crumbly. Just make sure it's set enough so that it doesn't all leak out from under the cookie cutters.

Today is Patriot Day, honoring those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

In honor of Patriot Day, flags are flying at half-staff in Ohio and around the country. It's part of the law passed by Congress in December 2001 designating Patriot Day.

It's been 23 years since terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes in a coordinated attack that killed 2,977 people in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001.
It’s hard to believe that 23 years have passed since this tragedy!! But all these years later, we show that our country has never forgotten. We will forever honor the truly extraordinary courage of the first responders who ran toward the fire when our nation was under attack. In those moments of chaos, they defined true heroism by risking everything to save others. Their sacrifice is beyond words, and we owe them a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.

How to Plant Hydrangeas --

Plant hydrangeas in early spring or fall when temperatures are mild. Before planting, give your hydrangea a thorough watering while it's still in its nursery pot, then select a location with appropriate sun or shade exposure for the variety you're growing.
1. Dig a hole two times the width of the pot.
2. Roughen sides of the hole with a shovel to allow the roots to pe*****te the sides and expand beyond the hole.
3. Remove the plant from the pot and loosen or cut any circling roots.
4. Set the plant in the hole so the root ball is at the same depth as it was in the nursery pot.
5. Backfill the hole with existing soil.
6. Water the area thoroughly.
7. Cover the soil surface with 1 to 2 inches of mulch, avoiding the area closest to the stem.

Planning the home fruit garden requires a bit more future-thinking than the vegetable garden. Most vegetables are annuals or biennials and spend just one or two seasons in the garden. Most fruits are trees or shrubs and live for 10 to 50 years or more.

Choosing Fruits for Your Climate

o Make a list of fruits you and your family like to eat. Those should go to the top of the list of fruits to grow in your garden.
o Make sure the fruits you choose to grow will grow in your climate. Know which USDA growing zone you live in and which fruits can grow in that zone.
o Fruit trees that are native to cool climates such as apples, pears, plums, and cherries and soft fruits such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries, and currants will grow in most temperate regions.
