What a thrill to learn that I've been named a finalist in two International Western Music Association award categories, Entertainer of the Year and Male Performer of the Year. Five finalists are in each category, and they are not only friends but also spectacular musicians and performers. I'm honored to be among them. Congratulations Doug Figgs, Kristyn Harris, Syd Masters, and Carlos Washington (Entertainer of the Year finalists) and Doug Figgs Jim Jones, Syd Masters, and Carlos Washington (Male Performer of the Year finalists.) Can't wait to see everyone in Albuquerque.

Let's head down to Woodland Park on September 21 for a grand old time. Donna and Tom Hatton have put together a marvelous to-do, and asked Ernie and me to pick and grin for a while. It'll be fun...and that Yummy Pie Social looks pretty intriguing. Hope to see you there.

Around 14 years ago, I was approached by some regional National Parks Service Staffers to be involved with a tenth-anniversary tribute to the victims/heroes murdered on United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. I wrote a song that I loved, and they did, too. Some of my fine musician friends and I went into Jeff Graves' Roundtree Studio and did a nice little demo. My friend Tom Mullen (who sadly passed over three years ago) assembled a moving video collage. I put together a business plan with suggestions concerning final recording and video with a preliminary budget. The project was sent off to the bigwigs in D.C., who responded by using a heartfelt little emo ditty from another bigwig's daughter (or perhaps granddaughter) at the nationally televised tribute. My prayers still go out to those who died that awful day, as well as to their friends and families. God bless 'em.

In honor of the heroes on Flight 93, September 11, 2001.

My old friends Tom and Donna Hatton are putting on a fine to-do in Woodland Park, Colorado on Saturday, September 21. They're wonderful poets/performers/singers who host this annual event that I've been unable to attend until this year. Ernie and I are rarin' to go! All the info's in the article below. Hope to see you on Saturday the 21st for a fine day of Western pleasure! Woodland Park, Colorado on the solstice...what could be better?

The Hole in the Wall Gang was founded by the great Red Fenwick and his compadres in 1977, and this week we celebrate our 47th annual Ride at the Great Red Wall near Kaycee, Wyoming. Gordy Meldrum and I are gonna head up Friday to warble around the campfire, puff on one'a Rex Hardin's cubans, and knock back a shot of Old Yellowstone in honor of Red. Fred Powell is gonna hitch a ride as our honorary navigator. Hi-yo boys...cinch them nags up tight!

So, I'm going to have to resort to old-time solutions. I've contacted Madame Cookie La Benoit LaRoux of New Iberia Parish, Lousiana, and have commissioned a curse on the slimy sumbitches who keep trying to peddle T-shirts by pretending to be me. I chose M. LaRoux's Cough & Contagion Package #4 which will cause the perpetrator's bowels to bind up, their sinuses to explode, their fingernails to fall out, and their mothers to admit they never loved them. Plus, every song they hear will sound as if it's being sung by Stevie Nicks. If that doesn't do it, I'll commission M. LaRoux's curse #7, and even I can't imagine how bad that'll be. Thanks for reporting the slimeballs.

09/06/2024

Well, you probably know I've been T-Shirted. The vermin have decided to use my name to spread havoc. Seems like it should be fairly easy for the Facebook overlords to handle this type of thing, but apparently not. In any event, like most of you, I'm NOT selling T-Shirts, and I'm not a "she." Just in case you were wondering.

Pat's brother Gary will be laid to rest in a few short days in Hastings, Nebraska. Through all the sadness, it's important to remember that he had a wonderful life filled with family and friends.

I’m pretty sure the world doesn’t work the way it used to because stories like that of Gary Talich have become so rare. Gary was truly a self-made man who unexpectedly passed away this afternoon in Hastings, Nebraska. He was Pat’s oldest brother and one of her life’s brighter lights. Growing up as a kid sister on a quintessential Nebraska farm, Pat endured the teasing and taunts from her brothers Gary and Rob and also felt their fierce love and loyalty. As the eldest sibling, Gary was the first to make his way out into the world, a young kid without a dime in his pocket who somehow managed to work his way into an accounting position in a small town, and from there to a larger company, where he spent his career perfecting and marketing products essential to livestock feeders. By the time he retired, he had grabbed the brass ring that would have seemed unattainable to a young accountant so long ago. He was part of a generation that did such things without complaint or expectation...they just worked their tails off. The love of his life, his wife Donna, passed exactly eight months ago. Today, his body rebelled, but who am I to say that perhaps he just felt it was time to join her? Maybe. Maybe not. Next week, Pat and I and Rob and Dawn will gather with Gary’s kids and their kids along with a ton of family and friends to celebrate what he did and who he was, and to return him to that rich Nebraska loam. Ashes to ashes. RIP, Gary.

Okay...It seems my first pass at promoting this show may have wound up in the "cloud" somewhere, probably having cocktails with Russian disinformation and "who really wrote the Beatles songs" posts. I've had a soft spot for Alamosa, Colorado since I was a kid. It was a place to stop, rest, and camp during countless trips to the San Luis Valley to fish the Rio Grande and its tributaries and a place where my dad worked as a drywall finisher during a remodel of Adams State College (now University). It's the hometown of my sister-in-law Eleanor, and these days, it's the closest town of any size to our cabin home near San Luis. We spend a lot of time there. On Friday, August 16, I'm honored to return to one of Colorado's treasured venues, Society Hall in Alamosa. A spectacular listening room as well as an inspiring place to play, there's a reverential aspect to Society Hall that makes a totally unique, and I love performing there. If you're out and about experiencing Colorado on the 16th, try to drop by Society Hall. I'd love to see you.

I'm thinking everyone ought to hop in their vehicles and make their way to Glenwood Springs this Sunday to experience one of the best meadow/house/barn concert venues in the land! I'll be at Four Mile Creek Bed & Breakfast concert series in Glenwood Springs at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 11. It's a breathtaking place, and we're planning on doing the show outside in a gorgeous adjacent meadow. In case of rain, we'll move it into the B&B's beautiful Red Barn. The show is donation-based, and a fine time is guaranteed for all. For info., call Jim at the B&B. Hope to see you in Glenwood Springs on the 11th!

There's nothing like a county fair in the Midwest to make you feel absolutely American. They are wonderful celebrations of community and culture, and I'm delighted to take the stage at the North Central Kansas (NCK) Free Fair in Belleville, Kansas at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 2. I'll be joined by Ernie Martinez and Lindsey Brown at this wonderful venue. Can't wait to be in the country's center to experience regional food, entertainment, carnival rides, and agricultural competitions/exhibits, plus the fairgrounds are home to Belleville High Banks, the world's fastest half-mile dirt track. My cousin Marcia Blecha and her husband Kelvin have long been associated with the NCK Free Fair and I'm grateful they arranged this appearance. Looking forward to spending time with friends and family from Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa! As a bonus, Pat gets to experience Czech Day at the fair, a tribute to her Bohemian ancestry! Take a weekend trip to this beautiful part of the country and join us as we bring our Rocky Mountain Western Music to the Great Plains!

What a ball the past couple of days. On Sunday, Ernie and I played a last-minute show in Castle Rock, CO in place of our pal Syd Masters, who is thankfully recovering from a road skirmish with a drunk driver. (See you in Red River in a couple of weeks, Syd.) Serendipity struck, as the show turned out to be at the spread of my friends Lisa and John Anderson. Lisa's dad, Col. Dale Boggie, was a close friend and true American hero, and I was honored to sing and represent the Hole in the Wall Gang at his funeral a couple of years back. I've known her husband John for at least two decades, and it was fantastic to see them. Then...last night was the fourth annual cul-de-sac gathering of friends and neighbors ramrodded by Jackie Swensson in her lovely Aurora neighborhood. Several Merritt Hutton High School alumni were in attendance including Jackie, her sister Linda, former U.S. Secretary of the Interior and Colorado Attorney General Gale Norton, and yours truly. Go Mighty Trojans!
