Jack Johnson - The first black boxing champion didn’t just strike fear into white America with his punishing style in the ring, but with his brash and haughty suits outside the ring, too. Even with the law breathing down his neck during the Jim Crow era, Johnson refused to be viewed as lesser than, refused to stop being himself. If you want to talk about rebel style, you have to start with Jack Johnson.

Looking at photos of Jack Dempsey during the height of his reign in the 1920s, you would swear the world heavyweight champ was a British dandy rather than a kid who grew up poor in the middle of Colorado. The newsboy caps, the cable-knit sweaters, the pristinely tailored three-piece suits—they’re moves straight from the playbooks of style gods Idris Elba and Tom Hardy. Wonder who they got their inspiration from…

Sylvester Stallone is known for his roles as action heroes like Rocky Balboa in Rocky and John Rambo in the Rambo series. Stallone himself is no stranger to the boxing world, having portrayed the underdog boxer in Rocky, a character who faces down incredible challenges with sheer determination and heart. Stallone also trained rigorously for the role, learning about boxing and staying in excellent shape for the films.
Roberto Durán, on the other hand, is considered one of the greatest boxers of all time, known for his toughness, ferocity, and unmatched skills in the ring. Durán won world titles in four weight classes and is famous for his legendary bouts, particularly against Sugar Ray Leonard, which earned him the nickname ""Manos de Piedra"" (Hands of Stone).
In a real-world matchup, Durán's skills, speed, and power in the ring would likely give him a massive advantage over Stallone. However, if we consider a fictional or playful scenario, Stallone's characters like Rocky could make things interesting due to their resilience and never-give-up attitude.

The rivalry between Sugar Ray Robinson and Carmen Basilio is one of the most iconic in boxing history.
Their first fight, in 1957, was a classic battle. While Basilio was no slouch—he was a two-time world welterweight champion and renowned for his resilience—he simply couldn't match Robinson's technical brilliance. Robinson's fluid combinations, superior footwork, and ability to control the pace of the fight made Basilio look outclassed. Although Basilio gave it his all, he couldn't break Robinson's defenses or handle his precise strikes.
In their rematch in 1958, Robinson again demonstrated his greatness. Despite Basilio's tenacity and determination, it was clear that Robinson was on another level. Many observers, including fans, felt a bit sorry for Basilio, who was a gritty fighter but ultimately was overshadowed by Robinson's extraordinary skill set. In the end, Basilio's courage and work ethic couldn't overcome Robinson's superior technique and ring IQ, and Sugar Ray emerged victorious in both bouts, cementing his legacy as one of the sport's all-time greats.

Some say that David Haye could make as much as £20m from his share of the world heavyweight title. It's certainly a lot more than Richard Dunn got for fighting Muhammad Ali.

Marvin Hagler is one of the few men in history who could slip into a suit and tie or an Adidas track suit and make either one look like a suit of armor. Which is fitting considering our favorite style moments from the legendary middleweight are when he would don a snapback with aggressively declarative statements like “No Mercy” stitched on the front for the entire world to see. The red and white “War” hat Hagler touted before his showdown with Thomas Hearns is truly a lost artifact in the annals of sports style—the type of statement piece hypebeasts across America would be scrambling to track down had the World Wide Web existed in 1985.

Joe Louis may have learned a thing or two about wearing a suit from his time spent in the military during World War II—the Brown Bomber’s off-duty looks were fly as can be. Any man can wear a polo, but it takes a keen eye like Louis’s to perfectly nail the proportions and transform a menswear staple into a best-dressed moment. That expertise came in handy when Louis finally decided to hang up his gloves in favor for some golf clubs and broke the PGA Tour’s color barrier in the early ‘50s.

Jake LaMotta, the legendary boxer whose ferocious fighting style earned him the nickname ""The Bronx Bull"" and inspired the iconic film Raging Bull, passed away at the age of 95 in 2017. Known for his unrelenting toughness in the ring, LaMotta held the middleweight title from 1949 to 1951 and became famous for his legendary bouts, including his six-fight rivalry with Sugar Ray Robinson.
LaMotta's life was a mix of triumphs and turbulence, both in the ring and out. His aggressive nature and determination made him a force to be reckoned with in boxing, but his personal life was often marked by struggles with relationships, finances, and the darker sides of his personality, which he candidly detailed in his autobiography.
Martin Scorsese’s 1980 film Raging Bull, starring Robert De Niro, brought LaMotta’s complex story to the screen, immortalizing his legacy and introducing his incredible yet flawed life to new generations. Jake LaMotta will forever be remembered as a fierce competitor, a survivor, and a fighter in every sense of the word.

Charley White was a British-born American boxer who gained fame in the early 20th century for his exceptional skill and power, particularly his devastating left hook. Born Charles Anchowitz in Liverpool, England, in 1891, White moved to Chicago, Illinois, with his family as a child. He began his professional boxing career as a teenager and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the top contenders in the lightweight division.
White fought some of the best fighters of his era, including the legendary Benny Leonard. Despite his immense talent and nearly 100 knockouts in his career, White never captured a world title, a fact that remains one of the great ""what-ifs"" in boxing history. He challenged for the lightweight title multiple times, including a notable bout against Leonard in 1921, but fell short.
