Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. It is recognized as the day that Black Americans were finally free, due to it being the day that the last slaves were told the Civil War was over and they were now free. It reminds us that we are not free until we are all free. This message is just as powerful now as it was then. Today, Juneteenth is a federal holiday, however, even before then, many still celebrated this momentous day with parades, cookouts, plays, games, and declarations of joy and freedom. Some find this day a great reminder to remain active in our communities, for Juneteenth is not just the 19th but every day.
