Here at IndyFASO, we love bringing natural, wild visual beauty into the hands of everyone. Touchable, approachable, beautiful flowers to hold and breath-in in the commemorating moments of life. They're milestones in our personal stories and business journeys, and flowers bring such life, unpredictability, warmth and visual impact to these days.

I often prefer pieces without any focal/face flowers. Gimme all the weird celosia, late summer grasses and unripened wild persimmons plz!

This randomly reminds me of when someone once told me that they bought a bunch of explosion grass, and thought of me. Ha! Best comment.

It’s true though, this time of year suits me as a designer. The end of summer, the first whispers of fall. Now I just need to go swim in a river before it’s too late!

Flower friends, I’ve been thinking about rituals that ground you to your place. Especially been on my mind since moving from NYC to NC.

So I’ve been making things with local farm flowers and yard clippings just for the experience lately. Totally different for me. I usually only create for event work honestly. I love the idea of becoming closer to a place thru it’s natural elements.

And then I thought, this would be even better if it was communal. So, I want to invite you to join me! Every-ish Friday I’m gonna try to post a piece made with only local ingredients. Designers and novices all welcome to make something in their place. Hash tag it and list your ingredients so we can learn from each other. Photo or video post, story, reel, whatever. Also feel free to share any thoughts as you reflect while making your piece- real-deal or lighthearted thoughts are both perfect.

It also can be something you’re making for work of course if you’re in the floral studio on Friday. 🙂 Can be simple as a bud vase for your kitchen or a large urn arrangement fit for a celebration! Thought it might be a fun way to intentionally reflect one one’s place as well as celebrate the beauty of local flowers. ✨

📣I have a pretty big announcement. It’s been a process of making this decision over time (though feels sudden), but Michael and I have decided to move to North Carolina for our next adventure together! 🎉

Why in the height of a wedding boom you ask!? Great question. Well, honestly it’s just a lot of little reasons put together. Partly to be closer to family, partly the opportunity to buy our first home, partly to pursue my deep interest in being a helper in the floral industry by accepting a new job with a locally-grown wholesaler (more on that later!), partly to help our rescue dog be more at peace, partly to simply try something new, partly to reconnect with my Southern roots, partly to feel what it’s like to contribute and live and do business in a smaller city environment.

I’ve always told myself I never wanted to leave New York on bad terms. As I pack my decade of possessions, I can honestly say it has turned out that way. I am not peacing out- middle fingers up- nor am I defeated by it. No, I’m just talking to the city- affirming it has been a true teacher and friend to me over the years, like a professor who you now call by their first name because you became genuine friends years later.

I also want to acknowledge that hearing news of another friend/coworker/neighbor leaving the city is exhausting. I have been on the other end of this more times than I can count. It’s hard here, and transient, but know that someone else leaving doesn’t mean you don’t belong. For what it’s worth, maybe someone needs to hear that. I know I have before.

As for IndyFASO the business, we are closing our studio in Brooklyn and wrapping up our last events- dancing out with disco balls and poppies (you’ll see)! We’re transitioning to a new place, figuring it out as we go. My current priority is to really step into my new role, hopefully grow a few flowers myself and design with flowers as much as I can along the way. If you know anyone in NC who I should meet in the floral, farming or event industry, please connect us! I would love that.

But IndyFASO isn’t only a business… (Cont. in comments 👇)

I feel like good design is half HOW you arrange something and half WHAT you’re arranging- The art of sourcing/ choosing visually meaningful ingredients is something I want to master! It’s a journey, but sometimes local flowers make your job look real easy. 😍

New album on the site featuring a fave event from 2021. 💯% local August flowers!

Florist confession! Funny enough, when I got married in late March ten years ago (just a couple months before I got my first flower job) I carried a slim single ingredient bouquet…so ahead of the trend haha, buuuuut it was made of all sunflowers. In March! The reason honestly was partly bc I did love sunflowers but also bc they were $3.99 a bunch at Trader Joe’s (where I used to work as a sign artist for many yrs) and I was a whopping 24 yrs old- with a modest income. And, let’s be real. I hadn’t really thought that hard yet about where my flowers were grown or the true pleasure of connecting a sense of season and place to an event through flowers. My journey to absolutely loving seasonal flowers, especially grown by local farmers, just hadn’t started yet. I’m thankful for experiences and people in my life who ignited my path towards learning more, and I still am an intrigued student today.

But if I got married to Michael again today, I would want something similar to this bouquet in photo…slim and easy to hold, but I think I’d go ALL local ranunculus, with some butterfly ranunculus for airiness.
