This week, Works In Progress Interns finished transforming the Dougherty Arts Center elevator with a fresh look.

Works in Progress (WIP) is an immersive program that prepares teens living in Austin for careers in the arts. To learn more about the program, visit www.austintexas.gov/worksinprogress

WIP Interns started planning for this project back in June when they met with professional vinyl wrap artist, Anne Davieaux. Davieaux explained the process of vinyl wrapping, inspected the proposed project space, gave tips, and provided hands on practice with vinyl wrapping.

Works In Progress interns crafted a design inspired by the Austin skyline and chose colors that would energize the space.

Check out this vibrant work of art next time you stop by!

Meet Kaelyn Provost, whose exhibit “Looking for Illume” is currently on display at the Julia C. Butridge Gallery.

Provost is a visual artist from Houston, Texas, who creates abstract and figurative works using oil paint and pastels. Her pieces call for the practice of self-restoration to improve our physical, spiritual, and communal well-being. She experiments with light, composition, and color theory to reflect the coexisting nature of the conscious and subconscious body. Provost received her BFA in Studio Art at Texas State University.

Learn more about the motivations behind Kaelyn Provost’s work at the upcoming Artist Talk at the Dougherty Arts Center, Wednesday, July 31 from 7-9pm.

Over the weekend, Visual Artist In Residence Chance Ramirez lead a Kintsugi style pottery repair workshop at the Dougherty Arts Center.

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending it with gold, a practice that celebrates the imperfections of life.

We loved seeing the visual transformation and new life given to each one of these ceramic pieces.

Join us Sunday, July 21 at 2pm for a free screening of "Road to Leadville 100 - Si Se Puede."

The film screening will be followed by a bilingual (Spanish/English) talk-back with Daniel Flores and the film's director.

Road to Leadville 100 - Si Se Puede is an inspirational documentary about Daniel Flores’ journey to complete the Leadville Trail 100, one of the most difficult 100 mile ultra-marathons in the world, due to its high elevation and difficult terrain. The film reveals how we are more capable than we think to shoot for the seemingly impossible and make it happen - si se puede! Flores says, “The cool thing about the documentary is that it tells a story. It’s not just about a race. It shares my journey as a Mexican immigrant coming to the U.S.”

This event is free and everyone is welcome!

The exhibit “Looking for Illume” by Kaelyn Provost and “Nobody is Perfect” by Natasha Kanevski are now on display at the Julia C. Butridge Gallery!

Both exhibits are on display now through August 3, 2024.

“Looking for Illume” is a collection of work by Kaelyn Provost who experiments with figures, abstraction, and light. Using oil paint, pastels, and assemblage, Kaelyn’s work acts as a representation of our physical and spiritual bodies.

Natasha Kanevski creates monochromatic abstract sculptures on canvas using large rough strokes and course sculptural elements. Her work reflects the roughness, wrinkles, irregularities, and cracks that emphasize humanity, revealing essence, delicacy, purity, completeness, and the fact that we are infinitely beautiful in our fragility and mortality.
