Calling all artists interested in creating public art, it’s time to sign up for the Public Artist Training Program!

Over the course of six weeks, learn about the field of public art, including the production of artworks for public places, proposal preparation, artist budgeting, and considerations for site selection and installation of art.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the Public Art application process, receive support and guidance by professional artists in the field, and develop their own package for use in applying for public art commissions.

Applications for the Dougherty Arts Center’s 2025 Teen Internship Program, Works in Progress (WIP) are now open!

Learn what the City of Austin has to offer in arts and culture and build your skills as a creative professional while contributing to the Austin community.

This 8 week paid internship begins in July and meets during the weekdays. Pay is $21.63/hour.

“I Am, and We as Energy, Rising” by Bibi Flores, “Glitter and Tears” by Hailey Gearo, and “Taste of Imagination” by Colton Matocha, are now on display at the Julia C. Butridge Gallery!

“I Am, and We as Energy, Rising” is a collection of abstract paintings and mixed media works with themes of healing, empowerment, and transformation.

“Glitter and Tears” by Hailey Gearo invites viewers into dreamscapes that transform personal struggles into vibrant otherworldly experiences.

“Taste of Imagination” provides familiar images of colorful candy, exploring forgotten dreams and cherished memories.

Spring 2025 Registration is now open for the Dougherty Arts Center’s Satellite Studio Program, which offers adult studio classes at three offsite locations in Austin: McBeth Recreation Center, Delores Duffie Recreation Center, and Dittmar Recreation Center.

For spring 2025, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of mediums. Some classes include creating colanders, mugs, pet bowls, garden gnomes, vases, and even paper-making.

Classes and workshops are designed to accommodate every skill level, with instruction by working professional artists.

The Artist Access Program provides free or low-cost rehearsal and production spaces to both emerging and established performance artists in the Austin area.

Dance Waterloo’s choreographers join forces with their maternal figures—mothers, mentors, and other guiding spirits—to uncover the similarities and differences in how ideas, feelings, and artistry take shape across generations.

The Julia C. Butridge Gallery has extended the deadline to submit exhibit proposals for the 2026 gallery season!

Located at the Dougherty Arts Center, the Julia C. Butridge Gallery is well known for its diverse exhibitions of artists and their work. There is no fee to submit an exhibit proposal and all related exhibits and events are free and open to the public.

Applications are open now through March 16, 2025.

INCLEMENT WEATHER UPDATE 9:30 p.m., 01/21/25: Most City of Austin Parks and Recreation (PARD) facilities will resume regular operating hours on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. However, City recreation centers and activity centers will open at 12:00 p.m. Additionally, outdoor year-round pools and golf courses will remain closed until they can open safely. Barton Springs Pool will be “swim at your own risk” until temperatures rise above freezing. All other pools will resume operations when temperatures rise above freezing. Learn how every day objects can double as tools for ceramic hand building!

On Saturday, February 22 from 1-4pm, Dougherty Arts Center Resident Artist Jamie Lerman is hosting a workshop on the methods of using found objects as clay tools. Participants will explore building and surface design processes, enhance confidence in their skill, and take home a piece made using commonly found objects.

Join the cast of Escándalo Saturday, January 18 at 8pm for an evening of improvised comedy and melodrama as they weave together a brand new, passion-filled telenovela based on audience suggestions.

Shows may contain adult themes, adult language, and prop weapons. The primary language is English, with some Spanish peppered throughout.

Escándalo Improvised Telenovelas is part of the Artist Access Program, through the City of Austin’s Parks and Recreation Department, Division of Museums and Cultural Programs, and the Dougherty Arts Center.
