"How to Talkbox"
The days of renting lights are over! I'm so excited to now own my lighting!!! 💡💡💡
And instead of renting a huge clunky controller, this DMXIS allows the board to be virtual - on the screen. The hardware goes from USB to DMX which is nice because the setup used to be:
Laptop -> USB cable -> MIDI device -> MIDI cable -> controller -> DMX cable -> lights
Now its:
Laptop -> USB cable -> DMXIS -> DMX Cable -> lights
The other day in the music section of Barnes & Noble, "randomly" amongst the albums there was a (book) biography of Rick Astley with just his eyes sticking up....I've been rick-rolled! 😆
O_o Just realized that the chorus of Dani California and LSU's Chinese Bandits is the same thing

Check out a YouTube version of a playlist I made on Spotify recently... DJ Guac's Picks!
Definitely interesting to add the visual component with some of them being music videos too.

Check out this mix by "CJ the DJ"
After a few minutes it picks up into a steady electro-swing. Pretty cool genre!
Hits and remixes from one of the classiest eras of all time. From Fergie, Will.I.Am & Jay-Z to Ella Fitzgerald and modern mixes of various orchestras. Turn back the time, turn up the volume. www.instagram.com/cjthedj27
Ok which camp are you in: "drop an album" or "release an album"?
I can't help but laugh at my discovery that the genre of "Christmas Trap" is a thing 😆
It's entertaining... Trap music has a lot of complicated hi-hat rhythms as one defining feature but it also often has sleigh bells (think end of Turn Down for What)...so why not make the sleigh bells Christmasy?!

My #1 song of the year: Break My Heart by Dua Lipa
Everyone's year sounded different on Spotify. Get your 2020 Wrapped
...iiiiit's time for Christmas music! 🎅
This is a great explanation of what makes Christmas music sound Christmasy. https://youtu.be/xm4LO22-cyY
Hint: Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" uses it. If you walk around a shopping mall, turn on the radio, or go to a coffee shop between Thanksg...
Check out "All I Need" by Grammy-winning artist Jacob Collier
and the very fun gospely "Love Theory" by Kirk Franklin which was some inspiration for the former
I think Jacon Collier is a musical genius...Everything he is putting out is truly an engaging listening experience. He has perfect pitch to a very granular level and he has some music that even uses key signatures between the normal ones!

I recently discovered the podcast "Switched on Pop". It's about the making and meaning of popular music.
https://switchedonpop.com/
The episode "The Pop Music Forecast" had what I thought was a great description of how the lyrics and production of Break My Heart by Dua Lipa is such a relatable and relatively long lasting anthem for 2020

What Shawn Mendes, BTS, Alicia Keys, Dua Lipa, 24kGoldn, Justin Bieber & Chance The Rapper can tell us about the state of pop music.
Fun fact: The tape DJs (and other industries) use to tape cords to the floor is called gaffer tape - it is much easier to pull up without damaging the surface or leaving residue behind. It's thought to be named after the gaffer which is the chief lighting technician of a film crew.
Looks like I'll need some more soon!
Opening song there...a few more than 3 Halloween songs out there but pretty accurate! 😆
"Why don't you DJ on vinyl?"
I 110% respect anyone that DJ's on vinyl!!! I don't do it though because of the bulky transport and storage and to make it easier to be creative. There are many problems to solve both ahead of time and on the spot with vinyl like:
- Where are the starts of tracks or loops?
- Getting 2 tracks to play at the exact same speed in compatible keys when speeding up a turntable causes the pitch to go up
- Nudging speed up and down to stay in sync
- Precision in letting go to start a track in time
Anyone doing all this is a master!! But going digital, I can focus more on being creative, the client, the people in the room, etc. Songs played at a tempo different from the original can get their pitched shifted back to sound how they normally would.
There are some fun mix ideas in here! This focuses mostly on things that unexpectedly go together, like completely different genres for example.
Like, Mambo No. 5 with Lose Yourself by Eminem?! Or Yoshi's Island with I Write Sins Not Tragedies by Panic! at the Disco!? Whaaaat! 😲

These mashups are UNBELIEVABLE! Subscribe with notifications on or I'll come to your house and act weird! These songs shouldn't work together but do. It's in...
