The Symbolism of the Mourning Wreath:

This cherished mourning wreath hangs on my front door and was created and gifted to me upon the loss of my father by ♥️

A mourning wreath is a timeless and poignant symbol of grief, traditionally displayed on the door of a home to honor a loved one who has passed. This custom, deeply rooted in Victorian-era mourning practices, served as a gentle way to inform neighbors and visitors of a family’s loss while encouraging privacy during a time of mourning.

Typically made of black crepe fabric, evergreen branches, or grapevines, the wreath’s circular shape represents eternity and the unending cycle of life and death. The color black, universally associated with mourning, underscores its somber purpose.

In the past, mourning wreaths were displayed for the duration of formal mourning periods, which could last weeks or even months. Today, families often choose to leave the wreath up until after the funeral or for a few weeks as a visible expression of their loss.

While less common in modern times, the mourning wreath remains a meaningful gesture, connecting us to historic traditions of remembrance and respect.
