Celebrate Bis*xuality+ Day, later expanded to Bi+ Week (Sept. 16-23), was started by Bi+ activists in 1999 because bi+ folks are often not fully included or recognized in Pride and other q***r spaces, even though we are a plurality of the q***r community and face unique challenges in a society that is monos*xist as well as homophobic. Because of these unique stressors, augmented by our lack of both bi+ community and bi+ identity pride, we have worse mental, physical, and social wellbeing than gay/le***an and straight communities.
Our society's monos*xism, present in our culture at large and q***r subcultures, means we struggle with internal identity development of our innate patterns of desire - so we often spend our lives feeling as if something is wrong with us, incomplete, confused, internalizing the bi-negativity and erasure of our culture. Even when we can name and accept ourselves as bi/pan+, without community and belonging we will struggle to finish identity development process. This is one of the most crucial reasons for bi+ health disparities which range from increased heart attack risk to greater suicidality than monos*xual folks.
Celebrating bis*xuality+ with all of you, forming bi+ community and pride, is an important preventative measure - and also a big joy!
(Reminders: Venue is 21+. We are a trans/nonbinary led space (and the majority of trans people are bi/pan!). Practice consent when interacting with others! Covid, flu, and colds are on the rise; make an informed decision on if this event is right for you, including the health risks of folks you may interact with in the week after. We will host events with lower risk in the future, as well as all-ages events.)
