Many years ago in the territory days, it was common for ring canvases to never get cleaned from the time they were new until the time that they were retired. They started seeing more and more cases of severe infections, much of it staph, some times it was worse. Eventually they learned that the canvas was one of the main causes so the canvases got cleaned on occasion. Even this helped a bit, though the territories that washed them regularly saw that they seldom had an issue in this area.
Today it is a crap shoot in the indy scene. Some wash them occasionally, some never. Some canvases can be a petri dish.
At Pure Vanguard Wrestling, Commissioner Doc makes sure that the outer canvas is carpet cleaned after each and every show. Our talent trust us to keep them safe; this is one of the ways that we do it. He is typically the one to do it.
Here it is drying after a recent clean.
