10 years ago when I started teaching, I had a clear understanding of what American society’s expectation was of boys and young men, stigmatized and positive. 10 years later, I still want to be a mentor and educator for them; however, the current cultural war of men vs. women, masculine vs. feminine, gender vs. s*x, woke vs. conservatism, orientation vs. orientation, has given me such mental struggle and diminished hope for their future I am preparing them for. Ideally, that’s the job. Give them the tools to make sense of the world, and do right by it. I don’t know which direction even our American society is really headed to with such polarized antics and perspectives. I am worried for them, but not leaving them. Locust of control is the name of the game now. Always looking for thought partners and healthy conflict on this, hit me up for a chat. One way I have risked becoming complacent and platoe is not continue to challenge and push my views in education with other teacher leaders and educational tree shakers at National conferences such as SLOC by Teach For America because the work can be become overwhelming or being a job that serves you well so you don’t aspire for more so you just let it go. No! Got to keep prioritizing my own growth and impact I can in this work by learning from others. Shout out to for asking me to facilitate thoughtful discussions with cultural responsive teaching and identity work in and out of the school community.

Dancer Thoughts: “It’s just dancing.” To some of us it’s not just dancing, and to be clear I am not referring to about how provocative and “s*xy” Latin social dancing can be to the unlearned eye (toxic@s don’t comment lol) It can be receiving someone’s offer of energy and vulnerability to reciprocate through a journey of gradual release, connection, humor, etiquette, and creativity …ultimately reaching a sense of nirvana (dance high). Because you NEVER dance that particular song with that particular person on that particular night the same way ever again, it’s 2-4 minutes of dual minded and dual-induced originality. Aim to be grateful for every social dance you experience. Even when it’s not amazing, it can still teach you something. My fellow leads, feeling very sapio -s*xual 🧠 right now, what’s impact does social dancing have on you? (Try to keep it deep not silly 😜) .0

Danza Folklorica de Huntington Park started off simply as a way to answer the call to a few parents wanting their child to stay involved after school. I kept this personal community project off the IG radar since it started it last September, but need to share how proud I am of these little folkloristas I was able to train all school year. I only expected 10 kids maybe to teach after school, and now we ended with 42 students who built a love for folklorico. So much gratitude for the parents like and , the HP Dance Center , and KIPP Comienza for their support over the school year not knowing what the next month would look like. We don’t know what next year will look like, but I can say we planted little semillas of identity, courage, and discipline into these kids they will never forget.

What my mother taught me without knowing today - Document everything your children do, even when they say they don’t want it or are too old. - Going through a box of your life memories in your 30’s saves you a lot pre/inner work time on the journey of mental/socio-emotional wellness.
