Even when not selling and just having a connection with a normal person I feel like small talk only brings out boring surface-level answers. But that doesn't mean to ask how their mother is doing if you don't know them! (Unless you're clearly joking)
An easy thing to do here is to ask a hypothetical question that gets them to use their imagination. From there you can go down that conversation to bring out a deeper connection.
