Sorry for the delay, folks. Here's the news about this week's First Friday Poetry Spectacular: Our featured poet will be AKeem Jamal Rollins, and we will be holding the show at a new location, 326 Cleveland Avenue NW! (That's beside Second April Gallerie, in the location that was recently Silver Stars Dance Studio.) A BIG THANK YOU to Kolp Realty and Arts in Stark for hooking us up with this AWESOME location to hold this month's slam!

Help Lake Effect Poetry get to Nationals!

LAKE EFFECT POETRY NEEDS YOUR HELP!!! That whole "poetry is synonymous with broke" thing doesn't work right now, we need funds to get the team to Nationals! Please help us get your team to NPS!

Lake Effect Poetry is north-east Ohio's slam team, representing Cleveland, Akron, Canton, and everywhere around and in-between. Our mission is to get the team to National Poetry Slam in Charlotte, NC, August 7-11.Your 2012 Lake Effect Poetry slam team is; T.M. Göttl, Mello the Poet, Carla Thompson,...

FYI: The Poetry Spectacular will be taking June off. We will not have a poetry slam during June's First Friday. (Vertigo will be taking the Lake Effect Poetry slam team to Rustbelt.) That doesn't mean there's no poetry in Canton on June 1st! We highly encourage our poets to perform "Random Acts of Poetry" around the arts district! Please keep your material radio-friendly (as anything outdoors during First Friday has to be all-ages appropriate) and find an unoccupied sidewalk corner to perform poetry for the uninitiated masses. :-)

THIS MONTH'S SHOW HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE ARTS IN STARK EDUCATION CENTER! Apologies for the last minute change, but Cable Hall became unavailable to us due to other events taking place at the Cultural Center this weekend. The Arts in Stark Ed Center is located at 1014 Cleveland Avenue NW. It shares parking with the Cultural Center (or you can access a free parking lot via an alley off of 12th Street). The Ed Center is the yellow brick building (or tan brick, but saying "yellow brick" is fun) just north of the Civic Center's jumbotron screen.

Please note: While the Ed Center is wheelchair accessible through a back door and elevator, for security purposes that door will not be left open during the show. If you are unable to use the front entrance due to the stairs, please call Vertigo Xavier's cell phone when you arrive and someone will let you in the downstairs entrance. Vertigo's number is (330) eight-four-four-zero-one-seven-seven.

Experimentation is always a fun thing. Sometimes the results are good. (Having the open-mic first worked well.) Sometimes the results are not-so-good. (Having a 12 year old judge the slam didn't work out so well.) Repeat what works, learn from what didn't.

09/17/2010

Notice: Starting with October 1st's First Friday Poetry Spectacular, we're going to rearrange the show. You should still get there at 7:00 to sign up, but the open-mic will now begin at 7:30. Once the open-mic begins, the list is closed, so get there on time to sign up.
