If you don’t know already, my day job is as a social worker for youth in foster care. One thing that I notice over and over is how many of the Black youth in foster homes could use some care and attention paid to their hair. It’s so easy for things like hair care to be neglected, especially when parents are busy working or taking care of other necessities. But for a lot of our youth things like this help them feel NORMAL. I’m so glad to see this service being offered in Carbondale. I donated and I hope you can too!

I have never denied to perform a service before, until today.

Now, maybe it’s not my business to know what goes on between two people who want to be married. Maybe I should just shut up and do the job. But, unfortunately that’s just not how it works in my mind.

To clarify: I would NEVER turn away a client due to race, class, gender, sexual orientation, etc. However, no matter your race, class, gender, sexual orientation, etc., domestic abuse is never an expression of love, and a marriage is not a solution for domestic abuse.

Please, if you skim this whole thing and take nothing else away, take this: GETTING MARRIED WILL NOT STOP THE ABUSE. Getting married to your abuser will make it harder to leave, harder to establish independence and harder to pursue legal recourse if needed.

I am always happy to perform weddings for couples who are in loving, respectful relationships. I will not perform marriages where violence is being used as a coercion tactic. Everyone should have the autonomy to choose whether or not a marriage is right for them, and I will never be sorry for not endorsing intimate partner violence.

Performing this ceremony for Bree and Jacob was so exciting. From finding the coolest spot to hanging around and helping as they took their newlywed photos, I absolutely loved being able to support this couple on their wedding day.
