We wanted to provide you with updates regarding President Trump's recent announcement of a 25% tariff on Colombian products starting tomorrow. This development could have significant implications for our industry, and we want to ensure you are informed of the current situation and its potential impact.
Here’s what we know so far:
Background on the Tariff Announcement:
The U.S. government has been sending repatriated immigrants to Colombia, but the Colombian government initially denied landing rights for these flights. In response, President Trump announced the tariff as a retaliatory measure. Colombian President Gustavo Petro has since stated his willingness to accept the repatriations "in a more humane way" and is offering Colombian planes to assist in the effort.
Tariff Implementation Details:
President Trump stated that the 25% tariff on Colombian products, including flowers, is expected to start tomorrow.
For tariffs to be collected, the change must first be published in the Federal Register. As of now, we are waiting for confirmation from the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) about when this will occur.
These tariffs represent a significant increase in the cost of flowers imported from Colombia.
Impact on Availability and Pricing:
Availability: At this time, we do not anticipate any impact on the availability of flowers.
Pricing:
When will price increases hit? Regarding timing, it is still uncertain. What is clear is that flowers subject to the tariff will take a few days to reach our coolers. Prices will not increase for Monday sales, and we will provide as much notice as possible when increases do take effect.
How much will prices go up? The 25% tariff impacts the FOB (Free on Board) Colombia cost of flowers, but it does not apply to air freight or land freight. Therefore, the total price increase to you will be less than 25%.
Industry and Kennicott's Response:
The sudden nature of this announcement has left the industry with little time to prepare.
Kennicott is closely monitoring this situation and actively engaging with officials in Colombia, CBP, and members of Congress to advocate for the flower industry and to seek clarity on these changes.
This is a rapidly evolving situation, and updates will likely come by the hour. We are committed to keeping you informed and providing as much clarity as possible as we learn more.
