Field to Fork event back for 2023

By Terry Dean

“Let us go hand in hand, not one before another.“ – William Shakespeare

CENTRE | That is the motto of the 2023 Field to Fork event sponsored by the McCord’s Crossroads Homemakers Club, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Hopewell Community Center at McCord’s Crossroads, located at 7290 County Road 16.

As in the past, this year’s event will offer entertainment, a program, a home cooked meal and door prizes.

“Field to Fork is an event to honor farmers,” said Shelia Mobley with the McCord’s Crossroads Homemakers Club.

The event is sponsored by McCord’s Crossroads Homemakers Club along with local farm services and agencies.

“The purpose of the event is to recognize all farmers and their impact on the growth of our county,” said Edna Jennings with the club.

“We are planning a very entertaining event,” said Mobley. “We will have entertainment, an auction, vendors and a good country meal with all the trimmings.”

According to Mobley, members of the local farmers markets, which have done particularly well this summer, will be allowed to exhibit their produce and other items.

Participants will have the opportunity to win a special item by registering at the quilters booth.

Guest speaker will be Morgan Flowers, director of communication for the Alabama Poultry and Egg Association.

While Cherokee is a huge agricultural county and overall recognizes the need to support farming in this area, one can never do too much to promote the industry and encourage our farmers in any way they can, according to the McCord’s Crossroads Homemakers Club.

“They (farmers) are supported very well, but they do need recognition for all their hard work,” said Jennings. “They are the backbone of this country. If you have food, thank a farmer.”

“Thank them more often,” said Jennings. “Use more Alabama-grown products.”

Proceeds from the Field to Fork will be used for the maintenance of the community center and for the McCord’s Crossroads Homemakers Clubs many service projects.

While attending the event, visitors will want to visit the club’s beautiful garden, A Place of Solace and Remembrance. The peaceful and lovely garden includes trees, shrubs, flowers, a trail, bench and a pond which were built by many community citizens led by Jennings.

A majority of the funds for the garden were from a grant from the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama.

“Our farmers are the backbone of our society, but even much more so in an agricultural community such as ours,” said state Sen. Andrew Jones. “I want to thank the McCord’s Crossroads Homemakers Club for sponsoring this great event and bringing back an old fashioned sense of community and celebrating the harvest.”

The McCord’s Crossroads Homemakers Club invites and encourages everyone to come and be part of this event.

“We all support the farmers every day,” said Mobley. “We just want to express our appreciation with this event.”
