Let me start off by briefly introducing myself. My Name is Neil Jeffrey and I’m from Charleston South Carolina USA. Monday thru Friday I work as the Project Engineer on the building of the Charleston International Airport. I am a RUSS Veteran, I guess you could say. I Painted the Hollyhood Bus for the 2014 Russ Fest. I learned a lot about how a bus should and should not be painted. Having this experience behind me has allowed me to review in hindsight, all things that could have made that project so much more. But having come to Norway in 2014 is what has given me the knowledge to write what follows.
Most People think there is only one way a bus could be painted or decorated. I’ve come up with at least 3 different ways that this could be accomplished. I’ll lay out in Vivid Detail the different ways I could complete a Russ Bus, I’m going to start off with the most common way, but I have listed below a preview of what I have in mind.
Option 1 – Flying over and Paint the bus on site with spray paint only
Option 2 – Painting the Pieces in the USA and Flying over to apply
Option 3 – Painting Pieces to ship for Customer application
Option 1 – Flying over and Paint the bus on Site with Spray Paint Only.
I can back this option up with direct experience. With flying over to Norway in 2014 to fully paint the inside of a 50ft Articulated bus With 100% Black Light Paint. If anyone would ever like me to do this again this is what it would take to make it happen.
First we start off with a time line. I have a professional job that pays for my health care, retirement, and all my bills. This job however does give me 2 weeks’ vacation every 6 months. So that means I can only come to Norway for a total of no more than 18 days at a time, including Travel. This leaves a total of 16 possible work days on site working on the bus. I painted the Hollyhood bus in only 7 full working days. With proper planning and 16 full days of work I can say with 100% certainty that I can do anything a client could want to do to a bus! I would like to give my Job notice of my trip to Norway well in advance. I would prefer 3 months of notice but no less than 2 months.
After we set the time line we need to start a line of communication on what you would like. You must keep in mind that everything and I mean everything must be properly planned to get the most out of my abilities. I will need to see photos of the bus, inside and out from every angle you could imagine no less than 50 pictures to start off with. If you have any dimensions for the bus I would need them at this point in time. I must know everything I can about the Canvas or “bus” I will be working on. Any structural changes that will be made to the bus after the pictures are taken, will need be explained in vivid detail.
Now that we know what I’m working on and when I’m working on it we can start to talk about what you would like painted on the bus. I would like the client to provide a photoshopped image of the inside of the bus along with all the individual images that were used to create this final product. Now I know this is asking a lot, so keep that in mind if you would ask me to provide the design. I have the ability to draw full blue prints of the bus along with full photoshop images of what the final product will look like. This however takes a tremendous amount of time and would have to be looked at as a separate charge.
Let’s talk about what the Customer would be reasonable for in contracting me to fly to Norway for 2 weeks to complete this project.
First off I will require 2 round trip airline tickets. One ticket for me and one for my wife/assistant, if you ask if I must have an assistant the answer is yes. This is not something one person should be expected to do alone. Lodging, I prefer to be with the bus the whole time I’m in Norway. This would require the Client to Rent and maintain the water and sewage on a 4 person Recreational vehicle or RV. This allows me to work on the bus on my own schedule and I don’t have to depend on anyone for transportation to and from the work site. In these conditions I can get in about 14 hours a day of work on the bus, I would prefer to be able to keep it down to 10 hours a day but I am capable of working 14 hour shifts. I found that out with the Hollyhood bus. Food will also be required and need to be provided by the customer. I would be willing to say that I would set a limit of $1,000 USD for a food allowance. I do not believe this will cover all the food and drink for a 2 week period but I am willing to share some of the cost.
Now it’s time to talk about Materials. The Customer must pay for all materials. I will be happy to provide website links to everything I will need. I would like confirmation that all materials have been received prior to my arrival. I can approximate about how much paint will be needed using the blueprint of the bus and the image of the final product. This is in no way an exact science and the Client must be prepared to acquire more paint at a moment’s notice.
We must talk about you prepping the bus White. If you want Ultra Violet paint on something it must be 100% White before you can even start. This means that all renovations to the inside of the bus must be completed and painted prior to my arrival. This is a must!
With all that out of the way we can now talk about the artist fee and how the money will be transferred. With all the overhead of putting us up and paying for food I realize the cost is already starting to add up so I’m willing to put in the work for as low as $?,000 USD total take home. The Customer must take on the responsibly and cost of transferring the money on exact dates. The First half of the Money Must be transferred the day I arrive in Norway. This Transfer of $?,500 on day one shows that you are willing and capable of paying. This also gives me time to see the transfer arrive in my bank while I’m still in Norway working on the bus. The second transfer must be made no later than 2 days prior to completion of the project or 2 days prior to my departure.
Now let it not be said that I am not a reasonable man, everything is negotiable.
Option 2 – Painting the Pieces in the USA and Flying over to apply
Most people don’t even think of this idea and I think I only came up with it due to the way that I paint when I’m not working on a bus. Let me tell you briefly how that works. I paint with liquid brush paints that I can mix and make any colors I want, they are all 100% UV reflective paints, which means I can even make a brown that glows in the black light. I use vinyl when I paint. Vinyl comes in any size or thickness you can think of, and I’ve used all kinds. The reason I use vinyl is because all my art must be mobile in order for me to set up when I get booked to decorate for concert stages, banquet halls, or festivals. See the vinyl can be rolled up and transported. This allows me to paint very large pieces and unroll then once I get to the site of the booking.
This idea can be used to make an amazing Russ bus. With the blueprints of the bus I can cut pieces that will fit the walls of the bus like a glove. I can spend months working on very intricately designed paintings that will fit on the walls of the bus. We can use Contact cement to apply the paintings to the walls of the bus and no one would even know that they were glued on. One major advantage to this idea is that at the end of Russ fest everyone on the team could keep the art work if they wanted. You should be able to peel it off the walls if you try hard enough.
I see this idea working with some spray painted background spots and some hand painting along the seams of the art work. I can Glue pieces to the wall then paint small areas that connect each painting, giving the effect of a bus that is painted in 100% UV paint.
This idea would save a lot of time for me in Norway. It should only take a few days to pull this idea off. This would cut down drastically on the travel, lodging and labor fees.
The Cost for something like this would totally be determined by the amount of detail you wanted put into the art work. I could spend a month working on the pieces that would make up the bus, or I could spend 6 months working on the pieces that would make up the bus. You can see how this would affect the total cost of the project.
Option 3 – Painting Pieces to ship for Customer application
This Idea is exactly as it reads. I can paint pieces for a customer to apply on their own using the ideas listed above. This idea would include no travel fees at all just material, Labor and shipping.
With this idea the Client would have the option of flying me over to supervise the application.
~~~
In the end the Client must know that this project is their responsibility and they must approach this project knowing they must do their part to make sure the project is successful.
Everything above was written in concerns to the decorating of the inside of a bus. Any discussion about painting the outside of the bus would have to happen in another forum.
