Anyone have bored kids at home right now? 🫣

Try giving them a drawing prompt that’s so BIG... the sky’s the limit!

Instead of saying, “Draw a boat,” amp it up and get those creative wheels turning:

“You get to design the world’s most incredible HOUSEBOAT. Your whole family gets to live on it. Your friends can parachute in by helicopter for play dates.

It has EVERYTHING you could ever want or need! And remember... when you live on a houseboat, you can’t just run to the store... so what’s it going to have?”

A treehouse? A waterslide? A pet dragon? A movie theater? A donut shop? A shark-proof submarine?

Watch what happens.  No limits = exploding imaginations!

It’s probably not something they’d think to draw on their own, and you’ll probably get a few eye rolls, but once they’re no longer trying to draw the “right” or “perfect” thing they’re off to the races!

And then if you want to keep it going - ask them where their houseboat is headed and have them write the story of the journey or draw the next stop on their adventure. Or dump out the kitchen junk drawer and go make the 3D version!

Sometimes all it takes is one great prompt to unlock a secret world of crazy ideas!

We have sooo many of these- do you want to see more? 👋 Art teacher and creative mom friends - we’d love to know... What’s the most imaginative drawing prompt your kids/students haveLOVED? 👇

Who’s feeling an SHBA Summer Project Series? 👋

Over the past 17 years, we’ve curated thousands of art and ceramic projects with thousands of young artists.

Some have been messy.

Some have been magical.

Some have completely surprised us.

And many have become all-time favorites.

This summer, we’re opening up the SHBA vault and sharing some of our favorite camp projects, complete with inspiration, tips, and tutorials so you can create along with us at home, in your studio, classroom, or wherever creativity finds you. We’re thinking of our “tried and true”, “no fail” faves that will make your eyeballs fall out!

We’ll try to share several projects each week! Or at least that is the goal! 🫣 Do you have any SHBA faves that you’d love to see in more detail? Let us know! ⬇️

First up: a wildly creative relief sculpture inspired by artist Holli Conger and built from everyday treasures, found objects, the entire contents of your kitchen junk drawer and a healthy dose of imagination.

Follow along and tag a creative friend who might want to join us. ❤️

If you’ve never visited Small Hands Big Art at WaverlyCLT, here’s a little tour of our creative home. As you walk through our doors, you’ll find two studios working side-by-side: our Pottery Studio and our Art Studio.

One of our favorite things about this model is that families don’t have to choose. If one child loves getting messy with clay while their sibling would rather paint, draw, sculpt, or create mixed media masterpieces, no problem! Everyone gets to follow their own creative path while sharing the experience together.

And if your child loves both, we offer a magical full day program that includes a half-day of each camp, and a fun hang with their fave SHBA teachers during the lunch break!

The studios operate independently, but they’re connected by the same joyful energy, amazing teachers, and belief that every child deserves a place to create, explore, and belong.

It’s a pretty magical combination. ❤️

Ready to join us? We still have a few spots available in upcoming camp weeks. Grab yours before they’re gone!

And if you’re in the south Charlotte area in or around the Arboretum, Balantyne, Waxhaw or Weddington areas, be sure to follow our new Waverly specific page Small Hands Big Art Waverly - it’s the place to go for hyper local content just about that studio location!
