About the other night . . . On June 24, 2025, The Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase hosted its annual Fireworks Party. There was a potluck dinner—lots of hot dogs and a plethora of salads, among other summer fare—which was followed by a front-lawn viewing of the fireworks display launched across the street at the Columbia Country Club. Thanks, guys! And thanks, too, to our WCCC organizers, Carol Wilburn and Jan Novotny, and their team members, who orchestrated such a fabulous event! Here are some photos, beginning with the calm before the excitement, and concluding with the bang—not the whimper—of some fabulous fireworks!

The Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase was a busy place on Sunday, June 22, 2025. The Club hosted an art installation, “Doorways to Democracy,” a display of art pieces made from doors salvaged from the restoration of an historic church in Derwood, Maryland. Encouraging civic participation, the doors centered on ways that American citizens could engage in our democratic process. Members of the public took advantage of this open house event at the Club. Have a look.

Doors to Democracy !!

A collaborative group of artists, activists and members
of a suburban, Maryland community created an art installation
"Doorways to Democracy" by turning salvage doors
into a powerful call for civic action. These 20 interior doors
were found during the rehabilitation of the dilapidated
Avery Lodge Free Methodist Church, built in 1891,
in Derwood, Maryland.

The speaker for the final GFWC-WCCC General Membership meeting on May 21, 2025 was historian Ralph Buglass, who spoke to us on “Off the Beaten Path in Montgomery County.” The presentation pointed out some spots of historical interest right here in our county, unknown by many and, thus, often unnoticed by passers-by. Thanks to our Program Chair, Marion Klein, for bringing Dr. Burglass to us, and hitting another one out of the park!
