The Literature Section of WCCC hosted a fundraiser luncheon on December 6, 2023. Our featured speaker was Emily Franklin, author of The Lioness of Boston. The historical novel centers on the life of art collector and museum founder Isabella Stewart Gardner. Ms. Franklin was a lively presenter, and she had us in her thrall as she beautifully read a passage from this recently published work. The event was well attended, and its proceeds will benefit the Club’s scholarship program. We do good work at the Club!

November 9, 2023: WCCC was “in the house” at the Fillmore for the Community Bridges’ Girl Legacy 2023. “Community Bridges empowers girls from diverse backgrounds to become exceptional students, positive leaders, and health young women,” and “has been serving girls and families in Montgomery County since 1997.” WCCC has provided support for this signature recipient of philanthropy for some time, and members of the Club’s Executive Committee were on hand to cheer the girls of Community Bridges on. These girls are on fire! We had a great time, and were inspired by their successes to bid during the fundraiser silent auction or otherwise to contribute to the work of Community Bridges. Pictured are Jane De Angeli, Wilsonia Cherry, Nancy Wright, Melissa Watts (President), and Maria Elena Singleman. Can’t wait for next year’s event!

ICYMI (In case you missed it), the Everything Arts Section of The Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase hosted an Artisan Craft And Gift Fair on Sunday, November 10, 2023. The event was quite well attended, as the views from the parking lot suggest. Inside the clubhouse, artisan crafts of all kinds—from mini terrarium sculptures, to laser-cut charcuterie boards, to fused glass jewelry, to papier-mâché Christmas tree ornaments, to colorful high-fired ceramic pieces, to hand-made note and greeting cards, to articles of clothing made from hand-woven fabrics—were available for purchase. Holiday shopping was in full swing at this community event! Proceeds will underwrite some of our philanthropic efforts. So, pencil in this activity on your calendar for next year, as plans are afoot for a reprise.

November 15, 2023: The General Meeting of The Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase provided updates on Club activities, including a report on the well-attended, highly successful community event/fundraiser, Mystery Mansion 3.0, as well as plans for the upcoming community event/fundraiser, Santa’s Workshop. After a tasty lunch, members and their guests were treated to a fascinating lecture on “The Wine Appreciation Journey: Origins, Process, and Tasting,” delivered by wine aficionado Tom Mierzwa. We learned a lot, and our lucky Club Treasurer, Nancy Wright, won the door prize—a bottle of one of Tom’s favorite wines! We have fun at the Club!

About last night, November 10, 2023: The monthly Happy Hour/Potluck Dinner events are great opportunities for members of the WCCC and their guests to get together informally for food and fun. Lively exchanges over drinks and snacks paved the way for more on-depth discussions when we sat down to dinner—wonderfully prepared dishes that members had brought to share. We were happy, too, to have Richard Sherman (husband of Immediate Past President Andrea Sherman) resume his role as the potluck’s “Master of Humor”; he had many-a-joke to offer as we ate our desserts. Thanks to Janet Novotny, Marlene Kaplan, and Laurie Mical for their leadership with this activity. We have fun at the Club. Join us next time—there may be square dancing to work off the great food!

November 2, 2023: “Dine Around”? Did I hear someone say “Dine Around”? Members of the Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase gathered for some food and fun at The Hunter’s Hound. The conversations (what to get one’s twenty-something grandchildren for Christmas, how much fun this year’s Mystery Mansion was, what is your book club reading, etc.) were lively, the Irish food was tasty, and the Guiness was cold! A good time was had by all!

October 5, 2023: Field trip?! Did I hear someone say “field trip”?! Indeed! Members of the Garden Section of the Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase took a little drive out to the country to Kingsbury’s Orchard in Dickerson, Maryland, this week. We enjoyed a fascinating lecture by orchard owner Gene Kingsbury on the joys of running an apple orchard business. He discussed some of the recently harvested varieties—some are best for cooking, while some are great for just eating—and we were able to chose from among them for purchasing. Some of us even bought some Asian pears that were available. Thanks, Gene, for a lovely visit!

Afterwards, most of us re-assembled at Cugini’s Restaurant in Poolesville for a delicious lunch and lively conversation. The dominant topic? How to distribute (Do I dare say, get rid of?) a lifetime of “stuff” as we downsize. It’s an on-going conversation. See you next time?

September 7, 2023: The Garden Section of The Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase held a fundraising tea, to support the Club’s activities, programs, and scholarships. Designed by Section Co-Chairs Barbara Evans and Terry Blank, the Garden Party Tea featured garden-themed treats, as well as a fascinating presentation by Bethesda Beekeeper Maureen Janis-Mick, “Save The Bees.” Barbara Evans even sported a festive hat—featuring a bee pin—for the occasion. A good time was had by all.
