Before Yelp there was “The Green Book.” The Green Book, officially titled “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” was a travel guide published from 1936-1966 during the Jim Crow era. It was created by Victor Hugo Green, a postal worker from Harlem. The Green Book was a travel guide that listed restaurants, hotels, and gas stations, that were safe for Black travelers during the era of segregation and Jim Crow laws in America.

The guide was essential for Black travelers who faced discrimination, racial violence, and limited accommodations and services while traveling. It provided information on where Black people could find lodging, dine, and refuel w/o encountering racial discrimination and danger. The Green Book included listings across the United States and eventually expanded to include international destinations.

Its legacy is a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of Black travelers during that period in American history.

So…. Y’all good? Since winter decided to show up today😆 warm up w/ our fave: The Old Fashioned. We love a good dirty cherry 🍒 in ours. They cost a little bit more than maraschino, but soooooo worth it. Cheers. Food’s ready.

🥃 Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe 🥃
INGREDIENTS :
- 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
- 1 sugar cube
- 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
- Orange peel for garnish
- Ice cubes

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Place the sugar cube in a glass.
2. Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters onto the sugar cube.
3. Muddle the sugar and bitters together.
4. Pour the bourbon or rye whiskey over the sugar and bitters mixture.
5. Add ice cubes to the glass and stir well to combine.
6. Express the oils from an orange peel over the drink by holding it over the glass and giving it a twist, then drop the peel into the glass.
7. Sip. Relax. Repeat

Hey foodie fam! A few cooking tips & SC90 news.
🍽️
1. When sautéing onions & garlic, cook the onions first because they take longer to soften, while garlic burns easily.
2. Cook bacon in the oven. Less mess. Same results.
3. Rinse rice BEFORE cooking.
4. Don’t wear a crop top or sports bra when you’re frying things.😆
5. Cook starchy foods in broth vs. water, it tastes better.
6. There’s no such thing as too much garlic.

Happy National Chicken & Waffle Day!
FUN FACT:
There are many stories of how chicken + waffles came about, but one story originates in Harlem. In the 1930s, a restaurant named the Wells Supper Club is listed as the origin of the recipe. Chicken + Waffles were on the menu at this Harlem restaurant during the jazz era of music. It was very popular amongst musicians after late night sets.
