With 2021 we thought it might be interesting to talk about New Years traditions. Most of us are used to staying up, maybe having a few drinks and playing with sparklers or poppers, while those in New York City go all out and enjoy the ball drop, but what many don't know is there are groups who don't celebrate the new year on January first. What might surprise you is these groups are very large. One of the most well known, though not highly acknowledged, here in America is the Chinese New Year which will be February 12th. This is a grand celebration very important and widely celebrated in communities connected with this culture. The Buddhist Songkran April 13-15. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year (always 163 days after Passover) and the Russian Orthodox Church (holding to the Julian Calendar) January 14 Are more examples of different new years. Then there are the Pagan and Witch communities that all celebrate differently, some celebrate on the winter solstice while others on the spring equinox. There are those who also celebrate on Imbolc or Beltane or Samhain. While we don't have enough time to go over all of these in detail right now, the point is while many of us are getting ready to celebrate a new year soon, don't forget to acknowledge and wish a happy new year to your friends and family on theirs. Diversity is one of the best parts of life. So if you are celebrating January 1st have a happy New Year!
If you haven't had your new year yet, give Coven Events a call to see how we can help you and your party guests herold in the new year! https://www.covenevents.com/contact or 719-641-0735

While the new year approaches and we look forward to all our new horizons, it is important to look back and remind ourselves where we came from. Jan 01, 1965, A pivotal but seldom discussed event took place that propelled the LGBTQ+ community forward to a brighter future. On the corner of Polk and Turk in San Francisco sits the historic California Hall. On this particular night and in this particular building a group known as The Council on Religion and the Homos*xual, or the CRH, was sponsoring the New Year’s Eve Ball. The night was designed as an opportunity for members of the LGBTQ+ community and the clergy to get together and increase discussions as well as promote homos*xuals as part of mainstream society. Sadly despite filling out all the proper permits and paperwork as well as even having a meeting with the s*x crimes division of the SFPD, the party was raided.
The entire night attendees were photographed coming and going as well as suffered extreme harassment at the hands of the SFPD. With so many members of the clergy, their families, friends and lawyers there to witness the nights events the media backlash was quick, fierce and wide spread. Abuse and discriminations of LGBTQ+ folks was rampant and swept under the rug, but no longer. The police could no longer arrest LGBTQ+ people for " what was wrong" and only for " actual violations of the law". While it has still been an uphill battle since then, that party helped propel LGBTQ+ people into the public eye to be seen as people and not as " wrong".
So as this abominable year comes to a close let us look to the future with renewed strength and purpose. Let us keep up the fight, but also look to other communities that suffer the same and sometimes worse injustices we faced and help them fight too. Empathy, love and looking out for our neighbors, is our goal for 2021, what is yours?

Thorrablot or traditionally Þorrablót. A midwinter celebration for the Norse god Thor. Started and mainly practiced in Iceland this festive dinner took place in the month of frost or Þorri, but Þorri was more than frost he was the personification of frost who was an early Finnish king who was son of a legendary Scandinavian king, Snær or translated snow. The festival quickly began to celebrate Thor(Þórr) whose name has been associated with Þorri.
The evening, as the second half of the holidays name blót (a sacramental feast held in the honor of a norse god) would indicate, was filled with speeches, poems, drinking and feasting all in honor of Thor.
The first celebrations of Þorrablót were recorded to have happened in the second half of the 19th century also believed to be the golden age of Icelandic history. The festival tapered off until the 1960s due to the rise of christianity, but made its comeback in Reykjavík all thanks to a restaurant called Naustið.
Today Þorrablót is common among Icelanders everywhere and is celebrated in many forms from informal dinner with friends and family to large organised events sometimes with stage performances and dancing. Larger Þorrablót celebrations are usually arranged by membership associations, associations of Icelanders living abroad, and as regional festivals in the countryside.
For us here in the United States the festivities would begin January 24th, 2021.
Coven Events Specializes in Pagan events like these. If you are planning a Þorrablót celebration or any celebration contact us today at https://www.covenevents.com/contact and see how we can make your celebration one to remember.

12/08/2020

Caroling, a much loved holiday tradition for those who, unlike me, can carry a tune, but did you know that even caroling has Pagan roots? These songs were sung on the solstice as a form of praise that the long nights were ending and that the sun and with it warmth would soon return. In parts of Europe these songs were sung around stone circles while others actively went around the town and sang their tunes. Those that went door to door would receive little gifts with tokens and sweets which represented the prosperity the Mother Goddess blesses upon all her earthly children. With the rise of Christianity the church began to produce their own holiday songs, but interest was quickly lost in the Middle Ages due to the songs being written in Latin which was not a well known language. The concept of caroling came back in the Elizabethen period when St. Francis of Assisi began his Nativity plays which were done in 'canticles', or told in song format. Less than 200 years later the first actual Christmas Carols were written though many have been lost or changed over the centuries. In the 1640s the Puritans did away with caroling again, but they were sung in secret and remained that way until the Victorian era when it made its resurgence for the last time and stuck around.

11/30/2020

The Yule Tree, or commonly referred to as a Christmas tree today is a very old tradition that has evolved over the years, but many of the traditions are still practiced widely today. The practice began in north Germany by the ancient Nordic peoples. It originally represented the Tree of Life or World Tree . In ancient times it was decorated with gifts people wanted to receive from the gods, and adorned with natural ornaments such as pinecones, berries and other fruit, as well as symbols considered sacred to the gods and goddess. In some traditions, garlands of popcorn and berries were strung around the tree so that visiting birds could feed off the tree as well.
The trees themselves were also symbols. Evergreens were brought into the house on the Winter Solstice to celebrate the waning of the darkness and the longer days that would follow. The Evergreens themselves were a symbol of protection, life, renewal, and rebirth. They were even seen as having power over death because their green was so constant and the trees so sturdy.
The practice of the Yule tree spread all across Europe over time until around the 1500's the Catholic church merged the idea of the tree with "Christ's mass". With the spread of Christian practices the Yule tree quickly spread under its new name and now has become the go to symbol of the holiday season.
There is always so much to do during the holidays with decorating, food, presents, parties, etc. Contact us today to see how we can make your Yule extra jolly.

The Yule log a tradition that again has transcended its origins. What are those origins? From what we know the ancient Scandinavians burned a huge Ash tree log in honor of the Thor, God of Thunder. In Celtic traditions though a large Oak was felled and placed in the hearth trunk first to be burned continually throughout the winter to repel malevolent spirits from entering the home. It was also believed the longer the log burned the sooner the sun would come to rewarm the earth. Even Christians took to this tradition around 567 A.D. by burning a yule log over twelve nights then putting the log under the bed for luck and protection.

Yule, a time of gathering, a time of magic, a time of rebirth. Yule is celebrated many different ways and has inspired similar holidays like Christmas. Many of the old symbols or traditions are still used today. Mistletoe and Holly for example. Mistletoe was to represent the female element of Yule. While now we hang it and when two people stand under it they're expected to kiss, originally it was to represent fertility of the Mother Goddess and the berries the seed of the Oak King. Hung over the bed or as an amulet it was believed to encourage fertility, but over the doorway as a protection from a verity of evils. Holly on the other hand represented the male aspect of the season. Due to the sharp prickly nature of holly it was thought to prevent evil spirits from entering the home and doing harm to them if they tried. They also are the symbol of the Holly kind himself, but also represent hope.
What is your favorite Yuletide symbol, and dont forget to contact us on how we can help you make the most of your Yuletide season.

It is Transgender awareness week, but what does that mean? This is a week set aside to memorialize and remember those who have been victims of Transphobic violence. Here at Coven Events, we celebrate diversity in all its forms. It makes our hearts heavy knowing how many victims there are and enrages us that these beautiful people's lives were cut short because they just wanted to be true to themselves. This is made all the worse for transgender women of color who are disproportionally effected. Four out of five homicides involving a transgender individual are transgender women of color. As a society we need to be better! As human beings we need to show support and love not hate, transphobia and racism. Be the change, be the peace.
To all those beautiful people trying to be and feel comfortable in their bodies, you are valid, & you are wonderful. Spite those transphobes and take another breath, live another day, and be who you were meant to be!
There are some wonderful organizations looking out for these wonderful people please consider donating to them whether it be as a volunteer or monetarily. We have added two examples but there are many great places to show your support.

Coven Events is a place of love and acceptance. it is hard to believe that only five years ago the right to marry was granted in all fifty states.
After that historic announcement the supreme court had this to say on love and marriage and we couldn't agree more

“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization's oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”
