I co-founded the Rosewood Arts Festival years back. And while this isn't a festival (not yet!), is a really cool solar event that happens in Soda City 2x per year. The picture I took of it in May 2018 literally colored my memories of the forever!

Hey, folks! Used a nice app called Sun Position, and it informs me that the first Columbia Karnak date this year will be APRIL 24!

Roundabout 8 PM on MONDAY, APRIL 24, the sun should be dropping right between the two bridges on the Columbia Canal And Riverfront Park and creating a spectacular solar splash!

Watching a sunset is a very special way to celebrate the Congaree River Walk.

See you between the bridges the evening of APRIL 24!

Take a moment to discover why we refer to the cool sunset that happens 2x a year in Columbia, South Carolina as Columbia Karnak.

No, this sunset event is not connected either to the solstices or the equinoxes, but the sunset does occur two times a year, between the two I-126 Congaree River bridges just outside downtown Columbia. And it's pretty darn spectacular, when the sun is shining bright.

The only place to view this solar event SAFELY is from the Columbia Canal And Riverfront Park walking/biking path between the two bridges.

No, it's not connected to any particular astronomical event, but It's a cool solar event, all the same. And it adds more than a little beauty to life in Experience Columbia SC.

We'll let everyone know when we've pinned down the exact dates for 2023 Columbia Karnak, including the one coming up in early May!

Karnak Temple in Luxor, Egypt was designed to align with the sunrise on the solstice, focusing light on a shrine to the sun god.

Below is a link to the exact spot where Columbia Karnak occurs 2x a year. Obviously a pedestrian or individual, SHOULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. observe this Manhattanhenge-like event from the Interstate.

But if you're a pedestrian or bicyclist on the Columbia Canal And Riverfront Park path below Interstate-126 and between the two Congaree River bridges, you'll be in for quite a lovely solar surprise in early May 2023.

(Still trying to identify the precise date. Stay tuned!)

Hey, folks, I started this page because 2x a year, something really spectacular happens at the Columbia Canal And Riverfront Park / Congaree River Walk. Twice a year, the sunset occurs right between the two I-126 bridges and creates a spectacular visual moment.

I've observed it a few times over the years--I love the Columbia Canal and River Walk so much!

Anyway, this is an event page, but it's a free park for all to see. And the sun will set just after 8 p.m. every day in the first week of May -- still checking to see if we can nail down the precise date. But that means the park will be open until 9 p.m. So the only thing you have to do is SHOW UP. (That, and pray for sunshine.)

We're (by which I mean me for now, plus those others who help with this page going forward) are not interested in selling tickets or making money off this venture in any way, shape or form. It's just a social media vehicle to let the public know about Columbia Karnak: this truly cool, pending event that creates a little extra beauty in Columbia , South Carolina!

I last was present for Columbia Karnak on May 4, 2018, when I posted this photo.

I guess we'd have to ask Neil deGrasse Tyson / Neil DeGrasse Tyson (how many official NDGT's are there on FB?) or Bill Nye Saves the World for some help in calculating the exact day Columbia Karnak will occur this year. :)

Erik. I have always thought that we should host some sort of Columbia Karnak festival 2x a year when the sunset aligns perfectly between the 2 Congaree Bridges at I-126 just outside of downtown.

I think Columbia Spring Karnak will occur sometime in early May. The last time I recorded it was May 4, 2018.

The Congaree River Walk is open to the public. Should be an amazing time for lovers of nature and "solstice"-like events. No, Columbia Karnak isn't quite like Karnak Temple, or even like Manhattanhenge.

But it could be something fun for many people to share collectively 2x a year!
