My Story

Like many others, photography was a hobby that I fell in love with early on when I was still in my young teenage years. (I still look like one though lol!) I was avidly into photojournalism working in Yearbook class and saw early signs of making photography more than just a girl with a camera. At 18, I was selected among a few other high school students to travel to Western Kentucky State to learn from photographer Jahi Chikwendiu of the Washington Post for a week learning to tell a story with a single image. It changed my life actually. This is when I was first introduced to Facebook. ;D

After a slow start in college in Texas as a pre-med major, I finally decided to pull the plug on the medical professional journey to continue where my heart and my passion was meant to be - Photography. I began shooting weddings, portraits, and predominantly lifestyle work until I did some serious internships and assistance for product photographers.

This has overall taken my career to new heights, with a skill set sharpened by years of hard work and shadowing some great photographers who have been in the industry since before I was born, I was able to find myself where I truly belonged. Product photography.

Working with people and products are two different things and require a certain approach to each. Photographing humans is about telling stories and showcasing the truth in an artistic way. Photographing products is about highlighting the best details of that product. I find both really enjoyable and a balance of both has helped me become a better photographer.

But it hasn’t been an easy ride. I’ve definitely had my fair share of rejection and struggle. And like many respected professionals in their fields, it’s a necessary part of growing and becoming the best that you can be. I found encouragement through this quote below.

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” - Ira Glass

Not only did Mr. Glass’ words motivate me but it’s been a key aspect in my story to share with others. I meet younger photographers looking for advice and I find this quote one of the first things that I tell them to look at. Don’t give up. Just keep working. The rest will come.

And it has.

I'm now a full time freelance product and lifestyle photographer based in North Dallas. I've had my work featured on Afar.com, Popular Photography, Plano Magazine, D Magazine, & Modern Luxury Dallas. I've also had the pleasure to work with well known companies like Amazon, Wisteria, and Neiman Marcus. And I’m not done yet.
