Exciting news in the state of Connecticut! Marriage licenses would no longer require information on the race of people under legislation unanimously approved Tuesday by the House of Representatives.

The bill, which passed 146-0 after a brief debate, next heads to the state Senate.

“I don’t believe that one’s race should be recorded with respect to a marriage license,” said Rep. Steve Stafstrom, D-Bridgeport, co-chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Rep. Craig Fishbein, R-Wallingford, ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, said that in recent years he became aware of the section on marriage licenses for racial designations. “I find that this requirement that someone declare their race in order to marry is offensive,” he said. “Two loving people get together and want to join themselves in a legal ceremony, they should not be barred because they fail to disclose their race. If anything, it prevents people who love each other from doing that.”

Bella joined me for a wedding at Oxford Town Hall on Saturday. I did not get a picture of the couple (wish I did), or their dog wearing a little tuxedo bib. So cute.

Bella stayed in the car during the ceremony, and was able to enjoy the geese, the water and the gazebo before we started.

Marriage License Update - April 6:
Effective Tuesday, April 7th, The Danbury Town Clerk's office will be issuing a limited number of marriage licenses by appointment only if the couple has filed an on-line application, has a date and officiant selected within 2 weeks of their appointment, and has emailed copies of their licenses or passports. Each couple will have their application reviewed by our Assistant Registrar of Vital Statistics who will contact them with an appointment.

As stated earlier, if I perform a ceremony in Danbury on a certificate that has already been issued, I will mail the license to the Danbury Town Clerk, or surrounding towns, instead of delivering it in person.

New rules for marriage licenses during this crisis.

Governor Lamont’s Executive Order No. 7I made a modification of the requirement that marriage licenses be obtained in the town where the marriage will be celebrated: extension of marriage license validity. Section 46b-24 of the Connecticut General Statutes is modified to allow any couple planning to marry in a town in which the office of the Registrar of Vital Statistics is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic to obtain their marriage license from any available Registrar of Vital Statistics from any town within the State; and to extend the sixty-five (65) day period of validity for marriage licenses for an additional sixty (60) days for any marriage license that is obtained or that will expire during the declared public health and civil preparedness emergency.

Danbury City Hall is now closed and the Town Clerk's office will not be issuing marriage licenses until the public will again have access to City Hall. My last 2 wedding for this year were on March 17 (congratulations my friends!). The scheduled wedding for May 5 has canceled.

If you do want me to perform a ceremony, either on a certificate already issued or obtained from another town, I will take proper percations and will mail any completed licenses into the office for registration rather than hand delivering them.

I've performed ceremonies on the beach, at an airport even one time with the groom hand gliding into his new bride, at so many different parks in the area, in old buldings, and in new. I've done a ceremony in the public library, in a flower shop and at many different restaraunts and wedding venues.
