Ahh, larkspur. You are without a doubt one of my favorite flowers to grow. Long elegant spikes, fluffy blooms, and those soft pastels I adore. These babies were in your bouquets last week and more will be in our flower cart this Sunday! We tried to grow enough to be able to dry 30% of our crop, but I am just loving it too much as a fresh cut to part with any to our drying rack! Larkspur can be a tricky seed to start indoors, since it loves cold weather and doesn’t like its roots disturbed. It is often a crop failure for us! This season we experimented with sowing it directly in the garden, and it was a success! It took a few seasons for us to feel confident in growing flowers. Luckily, you all get the shortcut with a few tips from everything we’ve learned! For those of you who are curious about starting flowers from seeds, here’s a list of what you can start indoors this week in Zone 5: ✅ Flowers that like the cold (think snapdragons, stock, bupleurum, and poppies) ✅ Perennials like rudbeckia, foxglove, yarrow or scabiosa You don’t need any fancy equipment either! Just some seed trays, seed starting mix and good ol’ shop lights or a window and you’re good to go. Baptisia is the best kept secret in the gardening world. ✅ It’s a perennial that will come back year after year ✅ It’s native to the US ✅ It’s drought-tolerant (its roots can grow to 6+ feet deep, so it can always find water) ✅ It’s deer- and rabbit-resistant ✅ It comes in so many colors!! You can find it in blue, yellow, cream, pink, red, and purple! Baptisia can usually be found at your local garden center in May/June in Zone 5 (when it blooms!) Pro tip: The original native version can get quite large (baptisia australis), but more compact varieties will stay under 4’ tall and wide. ‘Blueberry Sundae’, ‘Burgundy Blast’ and ‘Lemon Meringue’ are all varieties that stay around 3’ tall and wide! What’s growing on our farm already? - We have about 6000 tulips starting to poke out of the ground (far too early!). - 1000 fancy daffodils are pushing their way to the sun - 1200+ ranunculus will go in the tunnel on the right - 200 campanula are starting to grow for your spring bouquets (with more to be sown indoors) …..and we are only in February! ‘Stock’. Such a beautiful bloom with a terribly plain name. If you could smell this video, your nose wouldn’t believe it. Stock’s scent is intoxicatingly spicy sweet. It reminds me of vanilla or honey. We start our first succession of stock in late February here. The seeds are incredibly easy to sow and germinate. They prefer a cool start, ideally in a high tunnel. We don’t have high tunnels here, so they have to fend for themselves in the field. Are they the most productive flower we grow? No. Are they better suited to a farm with tunnels? Absolutely. But I cannot give them up! A memory popped up on my Facebook of college sophomore Kendra. If you had sat her down to tell her that one day she would be running a flower farm alongside her husband, she would have laughed in your face, and poured you out some gin bucket because she assumed you were straight up outta your mind. 😂I think back through all the moments of courage that led me to Dogwood. All of the small decisions to be brave, sit in discomfort and see what happened. There were thousands. And I don’t regret a single one.
