In this post I will explain the basic steps of making linocuts at home without a press. I love the craft of linoleum printing and I hope you will tempted to try it as well.
It was great watching Shelley Tate Garner work on her mail art piece at the Mail Art Denison Tx workshop on July 30. She began pasting a sheet from a small relief she had created by drawing the design on a Styrofoam meat carton then inking it. She had cut of strips of textured paper. Others attended also worked on their mail art pieces.
The next workshop will be 5:30pm, Tuesday, August 27. Place: Say When Distillery located at 111 Fannin in downtown Denison.

July 30th, 5:30pm, at Say When Brewery for an introduction to Mail Art (small free art that goes postal) Our Mail Art Workshops Denison Tx meets the last Tuesday of each month. Bring a pen, color pencils and pens, magazine clippings, printouts from the Internet, glue stick, scissors, cardstock, envelopes, etc. Make art, eat pizza, drink beer, and enjoy the company of fellow artisans. The bar is kid friendly as long as you keep them reeled in. They can also make mail art. Those participating last month bring us some mail art you have received or just working on. We learn from each other.
The key concept is it must go through the post office - postal.

Mail art, also known as postal art and correspondence art, is an artistic movement centered on sending small-scale works through the postal service. It developed out of what eventually became Ray Johnson’s New York Correspondence School and the Fluxus movements of the 1960s1. Here are some key points about mail art:
Medium and Materials: Mail artists use various media, including postcards, paper, collages of found or recycled images and objects, rubber stamps, artist-created stamps (called artistamps), and even music, sound art, and poetry. Essentially, anything that can fit in an envelope and be sent via post qualifies as mail art.
Artistic Exchange: Mail art is considered art once it is dispatched. Artists regularly call for thematic or topical mail art for use in often unjuried exhibitions. The movement promotes an egalitarian way of creating, bypassing official art distribution channels such as galleries and museums. Instead, mail artists rely on their alternative “outsider” network to share their work.
Global Movement: Mail art has evolved into a global, ongoing movement. It anticipates the cyber communities founded on the Internet, emphasizing interconnection among artists and celebrating creativity beyond traditional boundaries.
In essence, mail art celebrates the joy of artistic exchange, connecting creators across distances and fostering a sense of community through the simple act of sending art through the mail.
The deadline for this International Mail Art call in Vienna, Austria is November 17, 2024. The book will be compiled by Kevir Geronimo Brandter. There are two themes: Shame and Fe**sh. Become an Internationally published mail artist.

I am sorry but I am closing the Free Art 2nd Saturday Denison Tx site. But I am thinking about morph into something new, like mail art (art that goes through the mail. Costs you a stamp and hopefully they will return a small piece that made for you. This kind of goes along with the idea of 2nd Saturday.... Free Art for you.
It would be a sort of Mail Art meet ups, workshops, and of the mailing and receiving of Mail Art. I can recommend International and regional group. As my friend Mr. Jimmy would say "receiving mail is like Christmas". What happened to scrapbooking. I know wife tons of material... hey, that is fodder for your mail art pieces.
Lots of different styles and materials like envelope mail art (I saw my first prison envelope in a prison hear Bonham. Now that is another story). There is also Stamp Mail Art; ATCs Mail Art, Recycled Mail Art, etc.
Of course, I am looking for a bar in Denison that we can eat drink and talk about and make Mail Art together. Trades could be made there. It is FREE ART. Maybe we can make Denison a mecca for Mail Artists around the world. I went to my first Mail Art Conference around 1981 in Dallas.
I am serious, so if you are willing to let know. I am thinking a monthly thing. No officers, no rules, etc., etc., etc.
