Ok, so, a few slightly different things this time around, but also some not different things! We're up on the 4th Saturday in June, the 22nd. However, we don't have the Jungle Room this time around, so the entire night will be in the Rose Room. This means we don't have a cover charge, but will ask for donations instead ($10 suggested).

Also new, is the Queen City Rovers! Queen City Rovers is a Denver-based traditional band that plays in the Irish tradition with tunes across the eras. Fiddle melodies and vocal harmonies rule the day and are supported by acoustic guitar, bass, and percussion.

We've managed to have a good rotation of bands, so looking forward to hearing even more new voices from the area. Session to follow afterwards per normal.

May event coming up! Come join us on the 18th for Boys of the Town! Ticket's can be purchased in advance here:
https://www.mercurycafe.com/event/denver-celtic-night-ft-boys-of-the-town/

The Boys of the Town are a trio of players who originally meet at house parties and Irish sessions in the Denver/Boulder area. The trio offers a blend of flute, whistle, accordion, and Irish bouzouki as well as songs from the Irish tradition.

More importantly, Rock, John, and Les are awesome and you should come out listen to them play some awesome tunes. Also, seriously music friend people, lets all collectively work together to get better sound bites and bios for social media advertising cause you're killing me here...

Please comment with your best re-writes of their band blurb. We have great creative power here. Lets use that power for good. Or evil, quite frankly, whatever we can do to get some more likes. I'll crack out a bottle of Champaign on pour it all over myself if needed to break the internet in their favor. If you have post-performance suggestions for Jake, Willie, and Zach's band name feel free to chime in too.

Come see Jake, Willie, and Zach at the Mercury Cafe tomorrow (Saturday the 27)! I'm reasonably sure there are all photos of the appropriate people that we will have performing tomorrow at 6:00pm at the Mercury Cafe! Come join us, and see if my random internet stalking skills are sufficient to the task of finding trad musicians! Also enjoy wonderful music! Probably should have led with that...

Advanced tickets can be purchased here:

Or at the door for $15.

Session afterwards is free to attend!

2 weeks out! Jake and Willie wanted to be sure we gave a proper shout out to Zach Moon, who will be joining them on stage for the night as well, so updated posters. The ticket links should be the same, and even if the ticket link doesn't mention Zach, know that he is in our hearts and minds. Zach is a multi-instrumentalist that has collaborated with Jake and Willie before and will be adding to their tapestry of sound. Don't miss it, Saturday April 27th.

Or buy em at the venue day of and give me a heart attack because everyone shows up like 5 minutes before and I'm all like "Is anyone going to come? Does no one like this event? What is love? Baby don't hurt me. Don't hurt me, no more" and then everyone shows up and it's fine.

For real this time! As much fun as 12 hours of Marty playing Kazoo would be, that was our April fools event and didn't actually happen. If we can get Marty to play Kazoo at a session we promise to share out. Until then, come out and see Jake, Willie, and Zach on the 27th!

Jake Loew and Willie Crook are both accomplished musicians who play for Ceili's around the Colorado area. In addition to performing, Jake has produced, arranged, and recorded a wide variety of trad music for interactive media. Willie is also a world renown maker of concertinas, the most important instrument in Irish music. They will also be joined by Zach Moon on banjo. Chris rewrote their bio which was submitted as "We play jigs, reels, marches, waltzes, and hornpipes. Very danceable and fun." Chris does more biz stuff than Jake and Willie.

We’re excited to announce a pop up show with Marty Smith!

We all know Marty has been a fixture at Denver Celtic night, performing with 243% of the bands who have played to date, and we wanted to provide a forum for him to further express himself. When asked if he’d like the stage to himself he stated “Of course! As a bouzouki player, I’m the most important sound at any given moment but I find the backing I provide gets drowned out constantly by melody players. It's about time that we remove the rest of those distractions from the stage!” And he had the perfect idea for the evening, a transcript of our interview as we discussed his special event is below:

DCN: So, Irish Kazoo?
Marty: Yes, it seemed only natural.
DCN: In what way is it natural?
Marty: Well, the obvious connection between the Kazoo and the Bouzouki.
DCN: … I’m not seeing it…
Marty: It’s because you lack vision! Clearly, there is both a “K” and a “Z” in Bouzouki, and the only other instrument that shares these characteristics is the Kazoo. They are practically the same instrument!
DCN: I’m not sure that’s true. Also, what about the Russian Zhaleika?
Marty: You just made that up.
DCN: I rea…
Marty: Also modern Kazoo’s can be produced much faster and cheaplier than Bouzoukis. I have a crate full of them I will give to everyone at the session afterwards. This will revolutionize everything!
DCN:
Marty: Wait! Why are you running away!

So come join us [April 1st]* for this special event!

It's coming up! This Saturday, March 30th, come join us for an hour of Clarsach and harp music from Valerie Wedel! Open session afterwards! Singing, tunes, and even poetry to be had for all. I mean, maybe poetry, hard enough to get someone to sing, but we're going to go for it even if I have to read one myself. It will be epic, see you all there!

Advanced Tickets can be had here (Or can be purchased for cash at the door):

Reminder! This month we're doing Denver Celtic night on March 30th. That's 1 week from now! So come see Valerie Wedel on March 30th! You are of course welcome to go to the Mercury Cafe today and there's a lovely Jazz quartet playing, but Celtic tunes will be next week!

As long as I'm here, we do have a band for April as well, Jake And Willie! I'mma spice up their blurb a bit and post more info later on em, but it's Jake Loew on fiddle, and Willie Crooke on the finest and most noble of instruments: the Concertina. We're back to regular 4th Saturday in April so that will be on April 27th.

March performance is set! We have Harpist Valerie Wedel lined up for the stage. Will post ticket links when they are available! Everything is crazy in March!

Valerie Wedel plays Celtic harp, and has performed across the US since 2016. She traveled to the Scottish Highlands to bring back a Clarsach (wire strung harp) modeled after the historic harps of our Gaelic ancestors, in 2022. While in Scotland, she performed at Findhorn and in Edinbugh. She brings traditional and rare songs from our Gaelic ancestors, returning traditional repertoir to the wire harp. Ancient travel writers described the sound of these early instruments as like "ringing bells". Enjoy the lilting magic of traditional tunes on Clarsach, ringing like ancient bells across time...

Cóisir brings together three of Colorado’s top Irish music talents, Jessie Burns, Marty Smith, and Pete Strickler! Cóisir plays the traditional dance music from Ireland, intertwined with haunting songs, and original tunes!

They also have cool little hats on their letters!

🍀🎶 🎻We're still managing to somehow pull this off! Be sure to mark your calendars for this Saturday night, November 25th, for what I am trying to brand as "Denver Celtic Night at the Mercury Cafe"! 🍀🎵🪕*
*(I would have used a bouzouki emoji but there apparently isn't one, just a banjo, so apologies to Sky and Marty for that...)

Sky and Marty met for the first time several years back at the Spanish peaks Celtic festival in La Veta Colorado where they became fast friends and musical partners. Sky, winner of the Fiddler of London 2023 Global Diaspora Award, is a very passionate advocate for the living traditional music of Ireland. He plays fiddle, banjo, flute, guitar and the Irish bouzouki and sings as well. Marty studied under bouzouki greats Andy Irvine, Aaron Jones and Roger Landes and sings songs mainly from the British isles. Together they create an exciting, beautiful musical conversation, bringing unique melodic voices to traditional music.
