Samantha Muzzey-Wix with Metro Detroit International Native NDNz

My name is Samantha Muzzey-Wix with Metro Detroit International Native NDNz, a non-profit organization in partnership with (NAIA) North American Indian Association of Detroit. As a native artist & community organizer based in Detroit, my roots are from Little Traverse Bay Bands Of Odawa Indians in Michigan & Walpole Island First Nation in Ontario. Having grown up with my mother Theresa Shawanesse in Detroit, we participated and were surrounded by Anishinaabe traditional teachings and ceremonies. I continue those same teachings to teach my four children and grandchildren to follow their native way of life as I was taught. I am a senior traditional woman’s dancer and raise my children and grandchildren to participate in Native PowWows. I’m a self taught artisan and have made my own regalia, my children’s and grandchildren’s regalia and I also have been commissioned to create other people’s regalia all around the Turtle Island that include Men’s & Women’s regalia in fancy, traditional, and grass dancers. I have also taught a wide variety of beading classes throughout the state to a wide audience of Native and non-native audiences. I’m very proud to have this beautiful knowledge to pass along to others so that they’re able to make their own regalia. I’m also a cook for Native American foods and have a food stand called D’s NDNz for many years. We specialize in Native American cuisine like Indian Tacos & Venison Burgers. As a part of my upbringing, I’m constantly sharing my knowledge with family, friends, and clients. It makes me proud to see someone’s life change even in the smallest of ways by the knowledge that I have shared with them and look forward to being able to continue to do this for a very long time. I had a dream that I’m supposed to step up and help our community with our children and elders to bring them closer together in our community to learn our Native ways and traditions in the Metro Detroit areas so they can learn
