If it’s waves crashing, toes in the sand, and a beautiful sunset in the background you’re looking for, then check out these tips from our years of expertise about planning the perfect beach wedding. Everything from choosing the right gown to wind-proofing your decor — to keep you worry-free while exchanging vows on the white sandy beaches in ARUBA.
DRESS ACCORDINGLY
Try to Skip the full dress with long train. You may be able to walk down the aisle in a full dress & train however walking on the beach and taking photos won’t be easy. If a large dress is a must, make sure it can bustle easily. “Dresses with lace trim can be difficult because they pick up debris from the beach. Choose a light fabric like chiffon, this will flow beautifully especially in the ARUBA ocean breeze.
LET YOUR GUYS GO INFORMAL
Groom in a tux a BIG no-no in tropical climates,“We save the ‘penguin suits’ for our many beautiful chapels and churches. Cotton pants or even Bermuda shorts are great options for the beach.”
FLOWERS OR VEIL?
When marrying on the beach, think twice about a long veil, it can become a nightmare for you and the photographer. Instead, Consider an updo accessorized with a beautiful flower, or hairpins. Think of the elements when deciding on a hairstyle, a true updo will keep you looking polished throughout the ceremony and photography shots. We do offer trial hair and make-up to help you find the best style for the occasion. If wearing your hair down is the only option, try having the front part of your hair up.
FORGET THE HEELS
Sand and high heels just do not mix. Go shoeless, it’s the best feeling to walk towards the ocean, looking over the blue waters, while feeling the pearly white sand under your feet… the total experience. If you still want to “wear “something on your feet, wear flat sandals — shoes that won’t sink into the sand.
AT THE CEREMONY
Stay as natural as possible. A gorgeous ocean backdrop doesn’t need to be too dressed up. Highlight the natural beauty of the beach wedding setting with shells and starfish, which can also take inspiration from the harmonious color palette of sand, stones and turquoise water. These natural backdrops can help in determining the colors of your fabrics... e.g. arches, seat covers, and sashes. Your decor should be simple; avoid going over the top, this takes away the experience of why you wanted to get married on the beach in the first place.
PREPARE YOUR GUESTS
Make sure your guests know that your event will take place on the beach in the sand. You can mention your plans through a wedding website. If you decide to have a morning or early afternoon ceremony, prepare your guests (if you have any) for the sun by including necessary items in the welcome bags. Small-size bottles of good quality sunscreen, bottled water, and hand fans to beat the heat would be great as well.
TIME IS LIGHTING.
When dealing with beach wedding photos, lighting is especially important. Many couples love having their ceremonies during or right before sunset which is very romantic, and gives beautiful backdrops for your photos. However starting a little bit earlier e.g. 30-45 minutes before sunset will create great action shots in natural lighting, as well as sunset portraits. DO allow time to do formal portraits alone. 1. I know this sounds obvious, but since a destination wedding is such a non-traditional experience, couples often forget to allow time to run around and do portraits. 2. DON’T be rigid. Hire a photography professional who you know will do a good job and whom you are comfortable with, and leave the rest up to fate. 3. BE YOURSELF. Destination weddings are exciting and fun. You’ll feel like you’re on the best vacation of your life. Just be yourself and enjoy your day; the pictures will reflect the happiness of it all.
FOR THE RECEPTION
ARUBA’s Wind can topple tall floral arrangements, blow out candles and send other table elements flying. I know you have seen beautiful tall glass vases in magazines, however stay away from glass vases, which can easily break in the sand or any outdoor reception. If tall centerpieces are your preference, we can have the florist secure them to the table, camouflaged with heavy objects. For lighting, use hurricane-style lanterns or LED candles, which are flame-less and long-lasting. Make wind proof place cards and favors, tying sea shells to each place card. Weigh your menus and napkins down with conch shells or heavy beach theme decorations... e.g. small square glasses with sand and shells to add a creative touch. We know these few tips will help you get started on a stress free planning.
Have fun on your honeymoon & Happy Planning!
