It's been a great summer taking some more time to relax than usual, including six weeks in Rome, Cannes, Santorini, and Amsterdam, and working only with past clients over the summer.
I'll be back to accepting new clients starting in September.

When the leadership team needs a fresh set of photos for the website
Grace needed a mix of professional headshots as she preps to head out into the professional world from college. Here are a few of her picks from her 15 minute headshot session.
Team members usually have a great time "modeling" for company stock photos together. These usually go on company websites, Google listings, printed materials, etc. so companies can show off their real teams and offices instead of using stock photos with no ties to the actual company.
Güd Marketing wanted to breathe new life into their team photos - and give each team member a chance to show off their unique personalities with different photos around the office. We spent the morning creating more than 35 different looks - it takes a lot more work to make them different, but it paid off in the end. Swipe through to see how we did.
When you work in the dairy industry, it makes sense to set up your team photos with a white backdrop, no?
We're going for bold color with these new headshots for CEDAM. I've gone for vertical headshots to horizontal. It leaves more flexibility for cropping - vertical crop, square crop, circle crop, etc. - without losing the shoulders.

JD came in for an extended headshot session - 30 minutes in the studio to create a mix of ten final images for him to use for branding, speaking, website, social media, etc. An extended headshot session is a good option if you need a little more than a basic headshot but less than a full blown custom branding session.

I've been taking product photos for Craig Frames for around a year, but this was the first time that I had a chance to photograph their new set of mirrors. I wanted to show the mirrors across a mix of spaces - some hanging on the wall and some leaning on console tables.
It wasn't easy to come up with ten completely different setups, but I always love a creative challenge.
Here's an example of a really subtle outfit change while still sticking with simple brand colors (swipe to see the difference)
This session with a team from Dark Bank was a mix of traditional headshots, branding photos in an office, and team photos out on the street. The goal was to have a solid mix of images to use across the website and social media.
The two most popular colors that I see requested for studio headshots? White and gray. I don't know if I've ever done a simple headshot session without a white background option.
I usually see four different types of backdrops for headshots when I'm on site with a team: 1. Solid Gray 2. Solid White 3. Environmental backdrop matching (e.g. show off your office) 4. Environmental backdrop different for everyone (show off different parts of your office). This team chose a modern solid gray for clean consistency that's easy to replicate anywhere.
If ten-year-old Allie had known she would one day get paid to photograph (and bite into) artisan chocolates for a living, she would have told you that adult Allie had life figured out 😋
Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM) had me in to photograph their interns last spring. I loved that they were able to show off bits of their unique personalities even with the same gray backdrop across the full set.

Creating branding photos for your new website? Be intentional about pulling your branding colors into your new photos - think about how you use your branding colors in a backdrop, a outfit, a pillow, a mug, a notebook, books, furniture, etc. Also think about texture and mood. Is your brand vibe dark? Natural (wood + plants)? Clean? This will all drive the design of your session
I was looking back at some of my early headshots, and I realized how far I've come with consistency across team headshots. I sometimes make small adjustments to my lighting for different skin tones, so I have to be sure that my background matches across all of the images in the final images. October is always my busiest month. By the numbers: - Photo projects: 35 - Total hours behind the camera: 35(coincidence that it’s the same) - Sessions rescheduled in October for rain or flu: 12 - Late nights editing to podcasts or audiobooks: Lost count I’m usually big on work/life balance, but any photographer can attest that it’s a tricky balance in October. I did a better job limiting my sessions this year, but as you can see, it was still a busy month (not to mention the advertising/PR university classes I’m teaching during all of this).
2021 was by no means “normal,” but it’s nice to look back at what went right. Here’s a quick little overview of the events/moments I appreciate from 2021 - a reminder that there’s still so much to be grateful for. Some couples would be bummed out by a rainy wedding day, but not Katie and Andrew. It didn't slow them down for a second. Portraits in the rain? Cool. When I saw Sydney and Hugh yesterday, it had been more than TWO YEARS since we last got together for their engagement photos in 2019. Leah and Curt's wedding was a memorable one last year - after switching dates and photographers on my team, I ended up photographing the wedding last year at the last minute when Heather woke up with a cold - we didn't want to take any chances! This year, we finally got to complete the (now vaccinated) celebration with a cocktail hour and reception at Black Barn Vineyard And Winery. It was a delight to get to see the family a year later and have another wedding celebration - repeat wedding clients aren't something photographers usually want (ha), but this one was a treat! Isuri and Shashika originally planned to go home to Sri Lanka for their wedding this year, but the continuing pandemic made that difficult. Luckily, their friends Saroopa and Cedric, who I had the honor of photographing last year, were there to step in and guide them through a Zoom wedding so family could be a part of the celebration - complete with FaceTime family photos on the phone.
I felt like my brain was in a time warp when I thought back on how long ago I took Nicole and Umang and Nicole's engagement photos. There's no way that was 2019, right?! If you've had the pleasure of meeting Nicole and Umang, you know that they have a warmth that will draw you in immediately - you'll feel like they're old friends in no time. And the love of this family is so heartwarming! Umang's parents flew in from India and quarantined for ten days so they could stand by their son's side on this important day. The difficulties of the pandemic (and rescheduling of the original date) made this day feel so much more special. Thanks to Liz for her always fantastic work as second photographer. September has been the month of rescheduled 2020 weddings (and the month of couples who met at work!). Many, like Maddie and Joe, were married in small ceremonies last year. This time, they celebrated lakeside at Bay Pointe Inn. Maddie and Joe, have an amazing week up north! When you go to Mackinac Island, be sure to map your way to the Pontiac Trail Head up the hill from the Grand Hotel. It's like being on your own little secret trail overlooking the most amazing view. Jeff and I just found it this week while we were visiting. We also loved biking out to The Inn at Stonecliff and checking out the homes on Park Avenue. Enjoy! I met Kathryn's sister, Patricia, when we were assigned to live together during our study abroad summer trip to Rome. I got to photograph her wedding years ago, and I completely adore this whole family. I usually manage to get up to Northern Michigan for a wedding about once per year (we have family in Northport and Gaylord, so it's easy to make a bigger trip of it so couples don't have to cover travel). Lauren and Alex's wedding was jaw dropping - it's really hard to beat a wedding overlooking Lake Michigan. Lauren and Alex - I loved that you two were so up for anything when it came to photos. Lauren and Jacob originally planned a 2020 wedding celebration, but like so many 2020 couples, they had to change up their plans (multiple times). After a small wedding on July 31 last year, they finally got to have their celebration with friends and family. The wedding was moved outside to the MSU Horticulture gardens, and the weather was PERFECT - a welcome treat after so many obstacles. Lauren and Jacob - thanks for letting me spend the day with you.
