Here are some helpful tips when sending mail to your sailor:
1. One day shipping will not work. Mail sent is first sent to the local post office, then to the base mail room, then finally to the NSS mail room.
2. Do not surprise your sailor with mail or packages. They are not alerted by the mail room when a package comes in. Please ensure your sailor knows a package has shipped to them.
3. With hundreds of student sailors and many more offices and staff, there is a lot of mail. The sailors working in the mail room are human and although they try to keep the mail flow going, sometimes it can get backed up. Please be patient.
4. Do not ship anything weighing more than 85lbs to your sailor. Sailors will have to carry their packages back to the barracks room which is up several hills. Do not send tires, motor engines, large screen TVs, rocks, motor scooters, Lazy Boy recliners, Bowflex workout systems, weight racks, or mattresses.
5. Amazon Prime does NOT deliver to your sailor’s barracks room. Amazon Prime drivers do not have access to the base therefore any deliveries via Amazon Prime are sent through USPS, Fedex, or UPS. This takes time.
6. Do not send perishable food. The mail room is not responsible for keeping packages cold and cannot ensure that your sailor will pick up the package before the food is spoiled.
7. Do not send books. There is a library on base which has a lot of books, and when your sailor signs up for a library card they also get access to all the online books for free which they then can access throughout their career.
