Tips for Flower Care

Maintaining a bouquet's freshness can be a common source of frustration for many individuals once they bring it home. It's important to remember that fresh cut flowers are living organisms that can thrive longer under the right circumstances. The following guidelines can help extend the lifespan of your flowers:

Tip #1:
Regularly replenish the water. Replace all the water every 2-3 days.
Flowers have a high water intake! A sizable flower arrangement can quickly absorb all the water in a vase within the initial days at home. Ensuring the vase remains full prevents the flowers from drying out and wilting. Moreover, flowers are prone to bacterial growth in water. Changing the water every few days, even if it's not fully used, can prolong the freshness of your flowers and prevent unpleasant odors. For elaborate arrangements, carefully tilt the vase over a sink to drain the water without disrupting the design, then refill the vase by gently pouring water in at the top of the flowers.

Tip #2:
Trim at least half an inch of the flower stems before placing them in a vase and each time you change the water.
When flowers are out of water, the stem ends dry out and cells die, hindering water absorption. Cutting the stems before placing them in water exposes fresh tissue, aiding in efficient water uptake. Trimming the stems during water changes removes deteriorating tissue at the tips, exposing fresh tissue for better water absorption once again.

**Tip #3:**
To prolong the life of your flowers, it's crucial to shield them from heat and bright light. While it may seem intuitive to place your vase in a sunny spot like you would for a potted plant, cut flowers have different needs. Excessive sunlight and warmth can hasten their deterioration by promoting rapid aging. For optimal longevity, store your cut flowers in a cool, dark location. Additionally, avoid positioning them near air vents to prevent drying out from fluctuating temperatures.

**Tip #4:**
Steer clear of placing your flowers near ripening fruits or vegetables, particularly bananas and apples. Ripening fruits emit ethylene, an odorless gas that is harmless to humans but detrimental to flowers. Ethylene functions as a plant hormone that triggers the transition from a flower to a fruit after pollination. By exposing flowers to ethylene, they may prematurely shed their petals and transition into fruit. Therefore, it's best to keep your flowers away from ripening produce to preserve their bloom as intended.

Tip #5:
Once you discard your previous flower arrangement, make sure to clean the vase/container extensively using hot soapy water or, ideally, in your dishwasher.
Bacteria can accumulate in unclean vases and persist even after the vase has dried. Reintroducing water will bring back the bacteria, posing a risk to your new bouquet. Provide your flowers with a fresh, bacteria-free environment for an extended lifespan.

Tip #6:
Enhance the longevity of most flowers with "flower food."
While changing the water every other day can effectively extend the life of your flowers, utilizing the flower food packets that are often included with store-bought bouquets can be advantageous. This practice is particularly helpful in today's busy world where regular water changes may be overlooked. These packets not only nourish the flowers but also contain a bactericide that helps keep the water fresh for an additional day or two. Alternatively, you can create your own flower food by combining approximately 1 teaspoon of sugar, 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon of bleach in your vase before adding around a quart of warm tap water. It's important to note that some flowers, such as zinnias, sunflowers, and gladioli, do not respond well to flower food in the vase.

Tip #7:
Utilize sharp scissors for cutting. (Remember to cut at an angle)
When trimming your flowers, avoid using blunt or aged scissors as they can crush and harm the tissues/cells at the stem's end. Damaged cells have reduced water absorption capability compared to healthy cells. Opt for sharp scissors for a clean cut that minimizes harm to cells, except for the unfortunate few that may get sliced.
