I think it is safe to say, goodbye to snow, however I remember golfing with Steve opening weekend of fishing and it snowed on us. With that said, storm season is just around the corner. Good news I'm here to help all of you if you have hail, wind or other storm damage. Secondly, know your insurance coverage. Insurance companies say, ask your contractor for their license, see if they are insured and standing with the state of MN or BBB. I can provide all that information and you should ask for these things. Ask your insurance company if you have full replacement coverage or, what is called ACV coverage. Full replacement coverage the insurance will pay to replace the roof minus the deductible, which is the home owner responsibility. ACV coverage, the home owner is still responsible for the deductible and then also the depreciation of the roof. So say you have a 30 year shingle roof with $1000.00 deductible, your roof is ten years old meaning you would be responsible for 33% of the replacement costs. So let's say your roof cost $20,000 to replace, if you have full replacement coverage, RCV, your responsible is $1000.00 and insurance company $19,000. With ACV coverage, you the homeowner will be responsible for $7600.00 and insurance company responsibility would be$12,400. They will say it will save you money, double check what you save per month and how many years does it take to get to $6600.00. If you saved $60.00 a month, it will take over 9 years to recoup your money, bottom line, know what you have for coverage. Last day at SCSO and in jail, 19 years and 20 days, time to move on......
Well friends, it is getting close for me. I have another 32 working hours left at SCSO working in the jail. I just want say a few words about some of the most dedicated coworkers I have worked with over the last 19 years. I have watched these people deal with rude, disrespectful, swearing, confrontational and assaulting people, they try to stay professional, calm, and respectful. They put themselves in harms way from the time they walk into the jail, to punching out to go home. They look for drugs not because they want to catch someone with them but because they care about the inmates and others in jail and don't want someone to get hurt, or even worse. They come in early, stay late and loose valuable family time especially on holidays like this one coming up. Jail is a 24 hour job, meaning we don't shut the lights off, we have to be there to keep everyone safe and secure. It takes a special person to do this job, understanding the risks and continue showing up every day and night. You guys have earned my respect 1000 times over, I always knew if things got bad in there, there are many right there to have my back. Stay safe my friends, thank you for letting me go home back to my family each night.
So let's talk what the insurance company is responsible for. Insurance policy's are a promise to to do.....what the insurance policy say, however they try to not pay for things that they should. Just another construction tip for my friends out there when dealing with insurance claims for storm damage. The insurance companies want you to or will ask you to get three estimates out there. As a homeowner, you have the right to chose the general contractor to do the repairs on your house. You should chose someone you trust, has been in the area, is licensed and insured, knows what the Minnesota state minimum building codes for the repairs that need to be done on your damages property. When you have damage to your house from wind, hail, water or fire, who knows more to put your house back to pre loss condition, insurance company and their adjusters or a general contractor. I'm willing to bet a lot that the contractor knows what the minimum building codes are! Insurance companies need to pay for these things, there is a state statue or code stating this. Insurance companies will not put these on the loss statement because they don't know them or just trying not to pay them. These things make your house better, dryer and more efficient.
