We are happy to announce that Shepherd's Gate flowers can now be found at Cloudberry Cottage & Botannica in Alton!!! Lindsey and Paul have done an incredible job putting together this market in the location of what was once Moore Farm. Their new store is truly adorable- full of gifts, herbs, baked goods, farm fare, and so much more! (Plus, we hear that Lindsey's pies are unforgettably delicious!)

Don't miss out. Stop in and check out this great location, say hi, and of course... pick up some beautiful flowers!

Father's Day is Sunday, June 16th... and we've got you covered!

We recently got in a great collection of "guy stuff," including hatchets, knives, arc lighters, lanterns, etc. We also carry a collection of customizable box sets (featured here) that you or our staff can put together with gear he'll love.

Let us help! ... especially for that guy who's so hard to buy for.

A great movement has been gaining strength in which people find ways to be less wasteful in their daily lives. Buying locally sourced flowers is a beautiful way to do that!

Over the years, there have been some occasions in which we have ordered flowers or greens from outside vendors to help supplement blooms and foliage that have been requested for events like weddings, so we have seen first hand the kind of waste that this produces. Extra products that might come in some of these shipments may include: cardboard, plastic wrapping, plastic ties, rubber bands, styrofoam, cellophane, paper, or all of the above. Just for one order of one kind of flower!

Whenever possible, we use compostable materials in our production activities, but in the spirit of transparency, we acknowledge that we do use some plastic trays, cells, and containers for seed starting, as well as some plastics to help us with w**d control and season extension; however, we try to source sturdier materials that will last at least several seasons and take care of them so that they last as long as possible before we consider ordering more.

However, a major goal of ours is to greatly minimize any potential supplemental ordering (for some of the bigger events we do) by increasing our production activities. This means growing more of the flowers that we love using (and that our clients love seeing!) each year.

Be assured that when you leave our farm with a bouquet in hand, the only waste you’ll likely have is not more than a rubber band and maybe a paper wrap! The flowers themselves can be composted, and if you have your arrangement in a vase or jar, those are easily recycled or reused. (We even gladly accept our mason jars and vases back once you’re done with them.)

We hope that if one of your goals is to reduce waste, that you think of Shepherd’s Gate Flower Farm or one of your own local flower farmers! Believe us when we say that the support that you give to your local, family farms is much appreciated and benefits not only your local communities but also the environment in which we all live.

Have a beautiful day!

As we head through the 2024 growing season, we want to think with you through the question, “Why choose local flowers?”

Maybe Shepherd’s Gate is one of your local flower farms, or perhaps you live far from us and have someone growing flowers in your neighborhood that you can support. Either way, we want to share with you why we feel supporting your local flower farmers is a good thing, but also take you along and show you how we do things here.

In this series, we plan to share some informational posts twice monthly. One will be about the benefits of choosing local flowers and how they compare with those that are shipped in from far away, and the other will be about some of the practices we implement at our farm to grow beautiful blooms for you to enjoy!

We hope that you can learn something new (as we are constantly doing) and are encouraged to seek out flowers in your area or even to grow your own (there is no downside)!

Yep. We're looking for help!

*Volunteers: planting, w**ding, general grounds keeping, fall tasks
*Seasonal Help: customer assistance, boutique tasks, floral design

No experience necessary, but it can be helpful. More importantly, we're looking for people with a positive attitude, aren't shy of work, who will be a good fit. That said, this is a farm, so you must be able to work outside in the elements, around animals and bugs, and on uncertain ground. You know... on a farm... common sense kinda stuff.

Interested? Please email us using our Shepherd's Gate website contact form (link in bio).

What harbingers of spring do you usually use?

Pictured here is a Winter Aconite. For us, it's usually the first flower to open on the property. We're always very excited to see them, and they just showed their first sunny petals yesterday.

May your day be filled with beauty and love, especially the type that's slow, steady, and perseveres through all the craziness that life might throw your way.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. - ‭‭1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV‬‬
