I found this to be very humbling while being very comforting. I hope and pray it has a positive effect on you as it did on me. I am indeed thankful to live where God put me.

As we give thanks this week to God we should remember this: without His provision and protection, our nation is doomed. America’s increasing secularization represents a mortal threat. Ironically, we can even see our drifting from God in the annual Presidential Thanksgiving Proclamations issued thr...

Rebound with Grace

“Let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.” – Hebrews 4:16

“Rebound!” A word that is engraved into every single basketball player.

A rebound gets the team the ball. A defensive rebound allows one team to steal the ball from another. An offensive rebound gives the same team a second chance. No matter what side of the court a player is on, “rebound” should be repeated over and over in their head.

Our walk with Jesus may not feel like a game of basketball, but it shares one common theme: rebound. If we look in Scripture, we won’t find the word “rebound.” We won’t read that Jesus told His followers to “Rebound!” after they messed up. Instead, Jesus used another word: grace.

As believers in Jesus Christ, we are promised grace and forgiveness for our sins. When we mess up and miss the mark, God teaches us there is a way for us to rebound and have a second chance. But we cannot do this out of our strength; instead, God rebounds the ball for us out of His goodness and love.

God rebounds our messes and forgives our sins when we come to Him and confess, telling Him what we did wrong and asking Him to forgive us. When we do, He rebounds the shot we missed, hands us the ball, and says, “I forgive you. Try again.” The beautiful part is that God never gets tired of rebounding for us. We can go to Him every second of the day and confess our brokenness and all our mess-ups, and He will always rebound and give us another go.

God’s love will never run out or stop rebounding for us. As we mess up in life, let us not get discouraged or give up; instead, let us have confidence and rejoice that God is ready to hear our confession, lovingly rebound for us, and help us go again.

When you mess up, how do you feel?
How does knowing freedom in God’s grace and mercy make you feel?
What do you need to confess to God today so He can give you grace and help you rebound?

John 1:14
Romans 5:20
Romans 6:14

“God, I mess up so often, but You are so gracious to forgive me every single time. Thank You for rebounding the shots I miss and giving me so many second chances. I love You and am so thankful for Your grace. Help me have grace toward others just as You have for me. Amen.”

Wake Up, Sleepers

“For you are all children of light, children of the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness. So then, let us not sleep, like the rest, but let us stay awake and be self-controlled.”
– 1 Thessalonians 5:5-6

Coaches love an early morning practice. Athletes don’t have the same level of fondness. Having to wake up in the dark to work out or condition is one of the many sacrifices athletes make to continue improving their sport.

There are plenty of days when it is insanely hard to wake up, and you would much rather stay asleep and not have to deal with the coming reality. But you get up, get ready and go. Why do we push through? Because we have a goal and staying asleep pushes our goals further away.

In Scripture, to be “asleep” is usually a metaphor for someone lazy and unwilling to participate in life actively. To be spiritually asleep is not to be aware of God’s movements or ready to defend against attacks from the world.

As Christians, we are challenged to be prepared to share our faith, ready for Christ’s return, and ready to hear the moves of the Spirit in our lives. If we choose to be asleep, then we will not be prepared. If we are not prepared, we leave ourselves open to slipping into the desires and comforts of this world instead of pushing toward our spiritual goals. We will stop growing in faith and knowledge, backslide into sinful patterns, and open ourselves to spiritual attacks.

Jesus reminds us that with Him, we are Christians of the Light. He challenges us to wake up and live like true children of light.

You choose to wake up and go to practice. Make that same choice today to do that for your faith.

What are some of your faith goals?
Are there spots in your life where you are asleep?
What would it look like to wake up in your faith?

Matthew 26:40-41
2 Timothy 4:5
Revelation 3:2

“Father, wake us up. Breathe new life into our tired souls and help us each day to shed the darkness and live in the light. Help us see the areas of our faith that are asleep and open to attack. Convict us to live in the light You promised us. Remove any temptation we might face to cling to the world’s darkness. Amen.”

Not in Vain

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” – 1 Corinthians 15:58

The harsh reality of life is that sometimes, no matter how hard we work to reach a goal, it might not happen.

You might train daily to make your varsity team and still be on junior varsity. You might have a dream of playing your sport in college; then, in your senior year, you have a career-ending injury. Perhaps you are a coach, and even though you have been successful, your position gets cut due to budget.

In this world, we have no control over outcomes. We could work hard each day, but our dreams for our lives might not happen.

However, we have hope because there is work we can do that will never be in vain. 1 Corinthians 15 reminds us that our work for the Lord here on earth will have eternal impact and significance. If we are steadfast in our pursuit of the Lord, we have assurance that the work we put in will produce fruit. Will we always see the fruit? No, that is not what is promised; but there will be fruit from work done for the Lord.

We are called to work hard at whatever we do. That includes your sport. The thing we need to remember is that if we put all our hope in our sport, we will experience disappointment because we put our faith in this world rather than God.

So, pursue sport and dreams with the mindset that you are doing this work not for yourself but for the Lord and His Kingdom. Things done in the name of God will not return void.

When you work, who are you working for?
How have you seen your labor for the kingdom produce fruit?
How do you respond when a dream of yours doesn’t come true?

Colossians 3:23-24
1 Corinthians 10:31

“Abba Father, we thank You for giving us the desire to work hard at whatever we do. We pray that as we work toward our goals here on earth, we do it while working for Your eternal Kingdom in Heaven. Let us not work for worldly gain and pride but pursue You in all we do. Amen.”

The Rudder

“And consider ships: Though very large and driven by fierce winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So too, though the tongue is a small part of the body, it boasts great things. Consider how a small fire sets ablaze a large forest. And the tongue is a fire. The tongue, a world of unrighteousness, is placed among our members. It stains the whole body, sets the course of life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” – James 3:4-6

No one knows why certain words stick with us, and others fall to the wayside.

A positive affirmation from your coach could become a battle cry and mantra for you later in life. Conversely, a rude and negative remark could haunt your memory forever. As I am writing this, floods of words said to me by coaches and teammates fill my brain, ones I’m sure they do not remember, but they have stuck with me for years.

It is marvelous how one of the most minor muscles in our bodies can cause the most damage. Our tongue is a fierce weapon that can be yielded for good or destruction. Most of the time, we think our strength comes from our arms, legs or brain. While those parts of the body can have an impact, Scripture explicitly calls out the tongue as a source of great strength.

James invites us to picture large and powerful ships cutting through the waves at top speed. This large vessel, in all its glory and honor, is guided not by its speed, durability or power. The ship is directed where and how to proceed by a small rudder under the water guiding its direction.

This is an excellent picture of the power of the tongue and our words. A rudder can guide the ship to safety or lead it straight into the wreckage. Our tongue can either guide us safely or pass us into troubled waters.

Today, ask yourself, am I headed for troubled waters?
How have someone’s words impacted you?
How can your words impact the ones around you?

Proverbs 2:6
Ephesians 5:15-16

“Lord God, You have designed our bodies to be living vessels used for Your service. Frequently, we use them to serve ourselves and our agenda, including what we say. We pray for forgiveness today for how our words might have hurt our friends. We desire to be wiser with what we say and how we use our words in the future. Amen.”

THE Hope

“Because of His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” – 1 Peter 1:3b

In the mid-1990s, Michael Jordan retired from the National Basketball Association (NBA) to play baseball.

Before the end of the 1994 baseball season, when pro baseball went on strike, Jordan started hanging around the Chicago Bulls practice facility and participating in some practices. This fed a firestorm of speculation that Jordan was considering returning to the NBA. As he kept practicing with the Bulls, the speculation increased and even turned into a hope that he would return. When he sent his press release “I’m Back” stating an official return to pro basketball, there was almost a collective sigh of relief that he returned.

In his first epistle, Peter tried to encourage displaced Christians by pointing to the hope we have in Christ’s resurrection. But it’s not just a hope, is it? It is a living hope. This kind of hope is not just a strong wish that something will happen, like in the Michael Jordan story.

Hope in Jesus is a faith that has confidence. We have confidence that God will do what He says because Jesus rose from the dead, as He said He would. Also, it is a living hope. It is alive. It moves and grows. It is not stagnant or still. For the Christian, hope is faith in the Lord that helps us move forward confidently in Him.

As a follower of Christ, you can serve the Lord and live a life filled with the hope supplied by God through His Son Jesus. Thanks to the work of Jesus on the cross and His resurrection, we know that we can trust the Lord and walk in that trust.

If Michael Jordan’s NBA return can bring a sigh of relief, think of the excitement when we finally meet our Savior and Lord.

Have you ever had hope in something on Earth that failed?
How is the Living Hope of God different than our earthly hopes?

Romans 15:13
1 Peter 1:3-5

“Father, I am so thankful that You raised Jesus as promised. Help me to walk in the confidence that You supply. In Your Son’s name, I pray. Amen.”
