My favorite part of a maternity session is the last ten minutes before the mama-to-be leaves. We are usually chatting about the session and what she’s planning to do after, and the moment comes. She looks at me and says, “It’s been so long since I’ve felt this beautiful. I felt so comfortable and peaceful.”

In that moment, I know that my real job is done.

This sacred time between dream and fruition is one of my favorite things in the world to photograph. The joyful anticipation and fervent wishing give birth to an expectant energy that is palpable and is so easy to document beautifully.

This senior portrait session was extra special to me! Leena’s mom and I are friends, and within minutes, we were all laughing and chatting like old friends, walking around the Japanese Gardens, chasing the gorgeous light.

Leena is obviously so gorgeous but also authentic, kind and an old soul. By the end of the session, my heart was full, and I was in so much gratitude that I get the privilege to document such precious milestones.

We met working in the mental health field. She was a bad ass champion for those who struggled, and I always admired her determination and sweet heart.

Documenting the sacred time right before a woman holds her baby in her arms for the first time is one of my absolute favorite things. There’s a sweet, delicate expectation in the air and the hope is palpable. When the session is over and she invariably says, “It’s been so long since I’ve felt this comfortable and beautiful,” my eyes fill with grateful tears. This is more than a profession to me. It’s heart work and I’m so, so thankful for this gift.
