We are so heartbroken for Meghan and her family in the loss of Clay. They were married at our barn a few years ago and we loved them and their personalities from the moment we met them. We were honored to have this unspoken hero celebrate their big day with us and he will not be forgotten. Meghan, we will be here for you and whatever you need.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department extends our deepest condolences and prayers to the Illinois State Police and the family of Trooper Clay Carns during this tragic time.

On Monday, December 23, 2024, at approximately 9:42 PM, Trooper Carns was outside of his squad car removing debris from the southbound lanes of I-55 near Channahon when he was struck by a passing vehicle. He was transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries at approximately 10:45 PM.

Trooper Carns, 35, was an 11-year veteran of the Illinois State Police, serving with dedication in Troop 3. He is survived by his wife, Megan; his children, Gray and Ally; and his parents, Patty and Danny Carnes.

This devastating loss serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face while working to keep our roadways safe.

In honor of Trooper Carns, #6512, we urge everyone to honor the and always for emergency vehicles and personnel.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Illinois State Police, Trooper Carns’ family, and all who were privileged to know him.

Rest in peace, Trooper Clay Carns. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.
