The Pelican Island Bridge in Galveston is closed to all vehicular traffic after a barge collision on Wednesday morning at approximately 10 a.m. There were no reported injuries. Pelican Island is inaccessible to car traffic.

Emergency management officials from the City of Galveston, Galveston County, Texas A&M University at Galveston, and the state – as well as local fire and police departments, U.S. Coast Guard and Texas Department of Transportation – are responding to the incident.

Harborside Drive is open to east-west traffic; however, drivers will not be able to turn north toward Pelican Island from 51st and Harborside. Galveston police officers are in the area detouring traffic.

The collision has resulted in an oil spill in the bay. The U.S. Coast Guard is responding and will determine the extent of the spill, as well as initiate the containment and cleanup processes.

Engineers from the Texas Department of Transportation are also enroute to inspect the roadway and determine if there is damage. The bridge will remain closed until it is deemed safe to use. The City of Galveston will provide updates about this as information becomes available.

Texas A&M University at Galveston officials are assessing campus impacts in coordination with city, county and state officials and will issue a communication at 12 p.m. and at 2 p.m. through the university’s emergency alert system, university email and social media.

This is the latest update as of 12 p.m. The City of Galveston will provide information as it becomes available.

A fascinating historical fact about pirates is that they often operated under a code of conduct known as the "pirate code" or "articles of agreement." This code outlined rules and regulations governing behavior, division of loot, and dispute resolution among pirates. Each pirate crew typically had its own set of articles, tailored to their specific needs and circumstances, but they generally emphasized equality among crew members, democratic decision-making, and fair treatment of captured enemies. Violating the pirate code could result in severe punishment, including marooning or even death, highlighting the importance of order and discipline within pirate communities. 🏴‍☠️⚔️📜

DOMINIQUE YOU (1775-1830) Today, on the anniversary of his death, we remember our fallen Brother, Patriot and Pirate, Dominique You. He joined up with Jean Lafitte in the early 1800's and became the captain of the pirate ship Le Pandoure. According to history, he had a reputation for being very bold and daring. His men fought in the battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815, and were mentioned in General Andrew Jackson's general order of January 21st as, "Having shown uncommon gallantry and skill in the field". He settled quietly in New Orleans where he became a politician and supporter of General Jackson. He was given full military honors at his funeral. His grave is located in St. Louis Cemetary #2 in New Orleans. On his grave reads, "Intrepid warrior on land and sea. In a hundred combats showed his valor. This new Bayard without reproach or fear could have witnessed the ending of the world without trembling." ~ Jean Lafitte 🏴‍☠️
