On Saturday, Feb. 8 at 4 PM, Music, Gettysburg! will present a free concert by the Bardin-Niskala Duo. This performance by the piano/cello duo will be one of the most unusual and riveting we've ever hosted. The talented pair will perform music they commissioned from composers around the world, based on the musical traditions of the composers' own lands (from Venezuela to Hawai'i, Japan to Haiti). Each piece will be preceded by a video of the composer talking about the piece. Join these talented young artists in this free concert, open to all. And, yes, it's taking place on a Saturday, in the Gettysburg chapel of United Lutheran Seminary, so you can still watch the Big Game on Sunday!

Concerts are free and open to the public, thanks to support from United Lutheran Seminary, from businesses, and from many individuals.

Celebrate the world's most beloved poet on Friday, January 24 at 7:30 in the Gettysburg chapel of United Lutheran Seminary. Robert Burns Night returns, with Jeffrey Greenawalt channeling the Bard of Ayrshire and Cormorant's Fancy providing Scottish dances and settings of his songs. The evening will conclude with a reception featuring haggis! Free and open to all, of course.

We regret that the Essence of Joy concert scheduled for Saturday, January 18 has been cancelled. We regret even more that the reason for the cancellation is the death of the Anthony Leach, the director of Essence of Joy. That death is a musical and personal loss to many of us, and to his students and friends in particular. Rest eternal grant him, O Lord!

It is with deep sadness that we pass on the news of the death of Dr. Anthony Leach. Tony and his group, Essence of Joy, were regular performers on Music, Gettysburg!, and were to have graced the chapel on Saturday, Jan. 18. That concert, of course, has been cancelled (although the performance by the Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra on Sunday, Jan. 12 will go on as scheduled). Our hearts are with the Penn State community, present and past members of Essence of Joy and all whose lives were graced by this marvelous man and musician.

The Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra Baroque Ensemble, led by Ryan Kozak, will present a concert on Sunday, January 12 at 4 PM in the Gettysburg chapel of United Lutheran Seminary. Soprano Margaret Leonard-Folkemer will join the choir to perform works by Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Handel, Provenzale and Frescobaldi. And concertmaster Elly Toyoda will also solo in two movements of the Seasons by Piazzolla. A great occasion and a great way to spend an hour on a winter's afternoon. Free and open to all, of course!

Mary, the mother of Jesus, will be the focus of *A Christmas Offering* at 7 PM on Sunday, Dec 15 at the Gettysburg chapel of United Lutheran Seminary. This annual sampler of holiday favorites features some of the area's favorite performers. This year those performers will include the Gettysburg Children's Choir, Wayne Hill, James Day, Theresa Bowers, Jonathan Noel, Susan Hochmiller, and Steven Marx. The evening will include tunes new and familiar, as well as several carols to be sung by the audience. Like all Music, Gettysburg performances, it is free and open to all!

What a glorious way to begin the holiday season! Schola Cantorum of Gettysburg will lead a service of Evening Prayer, featuring music of hope and expectation from the last five centuries on Sunday, December 1 at 7:30 PM at the Gettysburg chapel of United Lutheran Seminary. With Pr. Keith Fair officiating, the service will include the opportunity to meditate on Biblical texts and to sing hymns old and new. Of course, it is free and open to all!

Prokofiev, Tschaikovsky, Shostakovich, oh my! On Sunday, November 17 at 4 PM, Music, Gettysburg! will present stars of the Sunderman Conservatory performing music from pre-Glasnost Russia. Leah Crowne (soprano), Scott Crowne (piano), Ismar Gomes (cello), and Elly Toyoda (violin) will make the hall ring. And the hall, of course, is the Gettysburg chapel of United Lutheran Seminary. Of course, the performance is free and open to all.

Music, Gettysburg! is proud to present one of the nation's finest early music ensembles in a concert at 4 PM on Nov. 10 Tempesta di Mare has been acclaimed for its passion and precision, and this concert at the Gettysburg chapel of United Lutheran Seminary will be no exception! Two tenors will be joined by three theorbo players (sort of lutes with an incredibly long fret and an incredibly beautiful tone) in a concert of madrigals. Be prepared for romance, joy, heartbreak -- a rare and wonderful experience! As always, this concert is free and open to all.

Two alums of the US Army Band and Chorus will bring their exquisite performances of classical, popular, humorous, and patriotic pieces to the Gettysburg chapel of United Lutheran Seminary at 4 PM on Sunday, Oct. 20. Chuck Seipp, on the trumpet, and Raffi Kasparian, on the piano, will present pieces, many in their own arrangements, from "Rhapsody in Blue" to "Pictures at an Exhibition." The concert will also include musical tributes to the Armed Forces, and to Vietnam veterans. It is free and open to all! More information at www.musicgettysburg.org!

Critics have called Peter Sirokin and Ya-Ting Chang's performances “impressive,” "stylistically refined" and "electrifying." And we'll get to hear them on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 4 PM in the Gettysburg chapel or United Lutheran Seminary. This husband-and-wife duo will present works for piano and violin by Mozart, Grieg, Tschaikowsky, Beach, Ravel and more. As always, the concert is free and open to all.

The Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra returns to the chapel at the Gettysburg campus of United Lutheran Seminary! On Sunday, September 8 at 4 PM, it will present works by two titans of Western music. First, it'll be Mozart's 35th Symphony ("Hafner"), and then Tchaikovsky's amazing 5th Symphony. Of course, it's free and open to all!

Breaking disappointing news. Looks like a 90% chance of thunderstorms on Sunday, August 18, so the Cormorant's Fancy concert will be indoors at the chapel at 6 PM -- still on the ULS Gettysburg campus, but you'll have to leave your lawn chairs and pets at home. See you then!

Cormorant's Fancy wraps up Music, Gettysburg!'s Summerfest with a free concert at 6 PM on Sunday, August 18 on the Gettysburg campus of United Lutheran Seminary. Cormorant's Fancy is the area's premiere Celtic musical group, bringing toe-tapping dances and tear-jerking ballads across the pond from Ireland and Scotland. And they'll be joined by dancers from the Ni Riain School of Irish Dance in York -- a special bonus!!

It's too early to call the weather, so keep an eye on this space to find out if it'll outside (bring lawn chairs, a blanket, a picnic or pets!) or in the roofed, air-conditioned confines of the Seminary chapel.

Looks like the weather is cooperating, and we'll be able to hear the Carlisle Brass Band outside on Sunday, Aug. 11 at 6 PM. Bring your picnic, lawn chairs, blankets, and pets to the pavilion need the corner of Springs Avenue and Seminary Ridge, on the Gettysburg campus of United Lutheran Seminary for a terrific concert of your brass band favorites! As always, if necessary, the concert will move to the seminary chapel, but we're hoping for the friendly confines of Schmucker Grove!! Of course, free and open to all.

Once more, this time because of forecast rain, we'll move the Dearest Home concert on Sunday, August 4, into the air-conditioned and roofed confines of the seminary chapel. We're praying that the Carlisle Brass Band concert on August 11 will be able to be at the outdoor pavilion, however.

Dearest Home returns at 6 PM on Sunday, August 4! This great group of musicians performs authentic Civil War Era Music, including Abolitionist songs, and traditional Appalachian and Old Time music. The free concert will take place, weather permitting, in the Hill-Unger outdoor performance pavilion near the corner of Springs Avenue and Seminary Ridge, on the Gettysburg campus of United Lutheran Seminary. So bring your lawn chairs, blankets, picnic, and pets! In case of inclement weather, it'll move to the airconditioned seminary chapel.

Sad news for Music, Gettysburg! supporters: Carol Christianson, wife of the main founder and founding chair of Music, Gettysburg!, the beloved Jerry, died this morning. Carol was a delight -- hospitable, energetic, and a mainstay of Music, Gettysburg! audiences (and the St. James Choir). We'll keep Jerry and his family in our prayers. The offering from the Dearest Home concert on August 4 will be donated to the fund named for Carol and Jerry, which supports a concert each year -- usually a choral event. Watch for more information.
