🚨IMPORTANT OPERATIONS UPDATE!!

While this will likely not come as a huge surprise to anyone who has been watching our Toyota cams or our recent Stories, we do want to officially let everyone know that we will NOT be opening on Nov. 28.

Like a lot of resorts in the West right now, we just do not have enough snow. But don’t worry, we have still had some epic seasons after later starts.

The snow is coming - it’s just a matter of time.

Is Cascade Open?

We get that it’s funny to ask, but we actually want to give you some helpful information for the next time you are standing down at the bottom of Cascade and questioning why it is indeed not open. Fun fact: Cascade has actually been open 48% of the days the past two winters.

Typically, Cascade cannot operate during storms because it’s exposed to wind. We also have a visibility issue; above treeline, it’s easy to get lost inside the ping pong ball.

Following a storm, first and foremost, is access. Nothing can be done without first grooming setting a road and digging out the top terminal (during big storms, 20-30 feet of snow can pile up in front of the metal access door). The snow pile can be so big that they call it “The Whale.” If it’s possible, the slope grooming team maintains the road during storm cycles to make access easier once it ends.

Once we have access, lift maintenance needs to check out the lift. If the haul rope got blown around and stopped turning during the storm, they will start de-icing the towers and the haul rope. Imagine scraping 1/4 inch of ice off your windshield. Now times that by 20. That’s the basic idea of how much ice can build up on the chair. The maintenance team climbs to the top of each tower and begins banging on the rime ice by hand. Then they move on to the haul rope, which is ~10,000 feet long. Finally, it is time to get the chairs on and get them turning.

Once grooming has granted access, patrol comes into play. They will pile as many patrollers and as much gear as possible into a transport cat and start doing avalanche mitigation and setting up rope lines. The amount of rope line can stretch up to a mile long and may need to be dug out from beneath feet of fresh snow or built from scratch.

Then the lift ops crew comes in to dig out and build the ramps, do their safety checks and make sure everything is running smoothly.

As you can (hopefully) see, getting Cascade open after a storm requires hundreds of moving parts and a lot of teamwork. But we honestly try to maintain access every.single.day - even if just for an hour (and no, we do not save it for weekends).

We are forever grateful to call Mount Hood home 🏔️

The amazing opportunities we have had up here, not to mention the wonderful people we have met along the way, is truly incredible. But sometimes that magic can dim a little and darkness can begin to set in. We understand that mental health can be a touchy subject, but it is a subject we believe in discussing.

And we aren’t alone: after years in the making, Olympic gold medalist Bode Miller has produced a film that tackles the mental health crisis that is sweeping mountain towns across the country.

The Paradise Paradox will be showing twice next week: at Mt. Hood Town Hall on 11/17 at 6 PM and at The Ratskeller on 11/18 at 6 PM. Both showings are free, but seating is limited.

For more information on this topic, please visit STAY, a non-profit foucused on raising awareness about mental health (www.somebodysthinkingaboutyou.org).
