During hurricanes, water levels will rise and give manatees access to areas they usually can't get into. Once the water recedes, they may become stranded.

Please report sick, injured, or stranded manatees to at 1-888-404-3922.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by Hurricane Helene.

Please call your fish & game personnel about any sick, dead, or dying deer you see. Do your part in keeping the ecosystem safe

We’re seeing an uptick in reports of suspected cases of Hemorrhagic Disease (HD) in white-tailed deer. If you spot a sick or dead deer:

💻 Report it online: Sick or Dead Deer and Elk (https://bit.ly/3Zu3FLX)
📞 Call Kentucky Fish and Wildlife at 1-800-858-1549, available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Eastern).

🔍 What’s Hemorrhagic Disease (HD)?

HD is a disease spread by bites from infected midges (small, biting flies) that affect white-tailed deer. Populations of these flies thrive in summers with early rainfall followed by dry spells. Deer infected with HD often seek out water to drink or cool off, which is why many infected, deceased deer are found near streams or ponds. Reports of HD typically diminish once a hard frost kills the midges. Learn more about Hemorrhagic Disease at fw.ky.gov.

For the first time in a decade, plants in the Atacama Desert have started blooming in the middle of winter, covering part of the world's driest desert in white and violet hues.

Researchers suggest that climate change might be a factor behind this unusual event.
Some attribute this rare bloom to rains in Northern Chile during the Southern Hemisphere's fall.

The blooming species included bright fuchsia "pata de guanaco" flowers and white "sighs of the field."

The main areas of flowering spanned between 115 and 155 square miles, confirmed by César Pizarro, head of Biodiversity Conservation and Scientific Research at the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) in Atacama.

We only have one earth! Stop hurting her and go with biodegradable options like cellulose glitter, monarch butterfly releases, planting native trees in memory, crazy planting (tossing seeds all W***y nilly in a area) native wildflower seeds that will help native pollinators! There’s so many biodegradable and ecosystem safe options!

When you decide to release “in memory of" balloons, they don’t go where you hope and think they will. They usually end up in a field where livestock are. Often, young calves or goats will chew on/eat the balloons…

Ingesting plastic such as a trash bag or a balloon can cause intestinal blockage in animals. This may cause starvation. Some livestock may even choke on the balloon, causing a very painful death.

For wildlife and even PETS, they can become entangled in the balloon strings, causing them not to be able to move or even strangling them.

I understand the sentiment behind releasing balloons and the grief felt from losing a loved one. BUT there are so many other options!

- Plant a flower garden or make a rock garden in memory of a loved one.
- Plant a tree and watch it grow.
- Host an “In Memory” Celebration WITHOUT releasing balloons.
- Name a star.

Remember: releasing balloons may give you a moment of comfort, but somebody else may be hurt by the consequences.

EDIT TO ADD: This goes for trash bags as well. Please, don't dump out trash on the road side!

UPDATE: Thank you all so much for helping to spread the word about the importance of not disturbing sea turtles, including the use of flash photography and lights. The photo was sent to the Sea Turtle Stranding Network by an anonymous tourist who was concerned for the safety of the loggerhead sea turtle on Friday, July 5th.

A team leader from Share the Beach (a volunteer sea turtle conservation group) immediately arrived at the scene. By that time, the sea turtle was already back in the Gulf. The team leader educated the tourists on the proper way to behave around nesting sea turtles.

No person may take, harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, or capture any marine turtle, turtle nest, and/or eggs, or attempt to engage in such conduct.

Any person who knowingly violates any provision of this act may be assessed a civil penalty up to $25,000 or a criminal penalty up to $100,000 and up to one year imprisonment.

For more information or to report sea turtle nesting activity, please call 1-866-SEA-TURTLE, www.joinACF.org

ORIGINAL POST: This sea turtle attempted to nest on an Alabama beach last night. However, the crowd of people and flashing lights deterred her from finding a suitable spot. Instead, she went back into the water, keeping her eggs with her. When you see a nesting sea turtle, leave it alone. Give her plenty of room and do not use lights or flash photography. Their survival DEPENDS on it!

This is a great safety guide for children swimming in lakes and swimming pools. The color of the bathing suit can make it easier or more difficult to see children while they are swimming. This is a good reminder to always have adult supervision when children are swimming. (Thanks to Praire Lakes Healthcare System.)

Fireflies face a variety of threats, but we are learning that there are ways that we can help them, including turning your outdoor lights off at night, especially during the summer firefly season.
