Redthreaded’s Day 19 - Pleats
Oh nothing, just the most perfect box pleats I’ve ever made. (These currently decorate the bottom of an 18th c. petticoat)

Day 12 - Hats & Hair
Got my hands on a few and is most definitely a thing, because these are TINY and ~just~ fit my wig head. I love seeing how they’re made, though… shaping, materials, lining, etc 🤗

Day 11 - Pink
Once upon a time, I decided to make this doll’s jacket. The fur is pink, or it was supposed to be. Now I just have a very fancy lady Santa jacket. 🤦🏼‍♀️ We can’t all be Barbie, I guess.

Day 10 - Recycled
Before and after… the life cycle of an old college formal. Fun fact: the style of the redesign was partially inspired by the Rose’s blue “Flying Dress” in Titanic.

Day 10 - Details
My favourite hero to cosplay, … I replay wanted her to have a more practical and textured tac suit. She’s not initially super powered, so extra protection at body points that would take a hit made sense. (That, and ditching those weird buttons)

Day 8 - Glitter
Just like anything shiny, sparkly, or glitzy, this did not need to be made. No one needs a kimono-sleeved bolero made from multicolored jacquard. But I needed to do it. By the way, if you’ve never experience how much stuff you can hide and carry around in the sleeves of a kimono, you’re truly missing out.
Swipe to see the best lining color choice ever. 🤩

Day 7 - Gothic
While I don’t have much in the way of “gothic”-era style projects, please enjoy this frockcoat made from a vintage 1940s pattern I picked up some years ago. I decided to make it more like a cloak-style coat rather than a dress, in black gabardine with white satin lining and black velvet buttons. (Ended up using it for Twilight Volturi’s “Jane” at one point)

Day 6:
My favourite ruffle technique — wired ribbon! Rather than spend an hour ruffling or pleating both sides of a ruched strip for decoration on 18th c. dresses, sometimes I like to grab a few rolls of wired ribbon (as long as yours not trying to go with historical fabrics exclusively). Just pin the end of the ribbon in place and start pulling the ribbon down the wire, gathering to desired fullness, and pinning as you go. Once it’s all down, just pull out the wires and you have a perfectly tight-gathered trim in place and ready to tack down. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Redthreaded’s Day #3 & 4 - Blue and Nature
Made this from an 1820s day dress pattern and some random blue batiste, but chose to modernize the sleeve cut and volume, as well as add mid 20th century trim. I haven’t actually worn it in quite a while (as it no longer fits all that well), but can’t bear to let go of it for the sake of the floral ribbon embroidery I did on the waistband (swipe for detail and for “nature” inspired, since I didn’t really have much else for that prompt 😆)

Day 2: First
Sadly this is the only photo of the commission kicked off professionally sewing — an early 18th c. polonaise. Done for a reenactor back in 2005, it was the only really historical request I received before all my commission requests turned more toward movie replica and “cosplay” (a newer term at that time 😉)
Swipe to see the Felicity Merriman children’s costume I made with the extra fabric!

Day 1: Intro…
Hi, I’m Apryl, and still currently in the process of unpacking my entire workroom (not pictured, for obvious reasons). I’ve been sewing for 34 years, professionally for 16 of that. Since I can remember, my passion has always been historical apparel, and I’m hoping to shift Chimaera to a more “inspired” wear focus as a return to my first love of anachronistic and quasi-historical fashion. 🧵🪡
