BINA stopped by my new photo/video studio in Hermosa Beach yesterday for a quick shoot. I’d been wanting to test out my new lights and shooting space, so she was my first subject. I’m pretty happy with how these turned out, but still have some things to iron out (like literally ironing the backdrop 😆). In 1983, the biggest tournament was the Jose Cuervo World Championships of Beach Volleyball in Redondo Beach, CA. I was 15 and this is one of the first tournaments I ever photographed. It's definitely the only roll of color film I shot, since that was all I could afford. The rest was black and white so I could develop it myself in my high school photography class at RUHS. Anyone remember the sponsor clothing companies Burmys, Catchit and Off Shore?

I think 1989 was the year I finally got serious about shooting pro beach volleyball. Before that I played around with it, but now I was in college and this had evolved to become my summer job. Other than being a player on the tour, I couldn’t think of anything better - it was my dream job. I was 21 and following the players to shoot them all around the country - Florida, Colorado, Hawaii, you name it. What could be better than that?

This is the 1989 AVP Manhattan Beach Open. Back then the bleachers were small and the court was big. Some things have changed, but Manhattan Beach will always be "the granddaddy of them all".
