Holland's Holiday Lights

Holland's Holiday Lights We operate a drive-in holiday display from the Saturday after Thanksgiving through December 25th.

We have operated our holiday display annually at this site since 1981, and we have not missed a year! It has grown in complexity over the years, and affords a traditional display, including life sized animations and audio animatronic figures, along with latest tech including thousands of individually controlled pixels programmed to our musical selections, and projection mapping of the South end of the house.

After 6 full weeks of setup, I just finished installing the last display item today!

Given this is our 45th year of having the display at this home, I decided to take on the challenge of significantly updating and upgrading our display this year!

In addition to new elements, lighting in many of our display pieces was replaced with new pixel and RGB LED lighting.

Wooden backdrops to several of the display pieces were replaced by Lexan and painted accordingly, so those will quite literally outlast me. The most involved one was to replace the old coroflake's coroplast backing, lights and controllers, with the new Lexan backing, controllers and LEDs. (1st picture seen below).

Once completed it was covered and the coroplast cover was sealed using quite a few sticks of hot glue, (2nd picture seen below).

As I mentioned earlier out life sized nativity figures, made originally by Hamberger Display had their thin metal linkages replace by thicker steel linkages which will give them decades of further use!

Our audioanimatronic Santa unexpectedly had the motor for one of his arms fail, and thanks to my buddy Brad, a heavy duty motor became its replacement, as well as an upgrade to its entire circuitry.

Also unexpected was a failure of the sound system for our Projection mapping system, so rather than purchase another amplified speaker I fabricated a 30 watt amplifier circuit to generate great sounding audio that feeds a speaker so folks can hear the audio when they view the projection mapping videos covering the South end of our home. This audio is not broadcast over FM, as that broadcasts the main display music in stereo. I had fun mapping 4 new videos bringing the total number of our projection mapping videos to 12.

Outside of last minute testing we are ready to go!

We are looking forward to this year's display, and we hope to see many of you during our walk-in family night, Saturday, December 13th between 6:30 and 8pm. The display will continue running until 10pm that night as usual, but folks will need to go back to driving in, rather than walking in, after 8pm..

It has been a very busy October for me setting up this year's display!
Setup started promptly on October 1st, staring off with me installing 6 of our 9 elevated display items - the snowflakes on 2 towers; the swinging bells, transforming cross/peace sign motif, the Merry Christmas sign, and the shooting star on trees; as well as placing the large ornaments on the evergreen trees.
I decided to install the 2 most time consuming display centerpieces first - the 18 foot pixel tree, followed by the new (2024) mega pixel tree supported by its 24 foot pipe. See pictures below.
Each of those took most of a day to install.
The life-sized nativity, Santa's workshop, and Brue the spruce trailers were moved out next. I still have to get the elf house and Cricket/Corky house rolled out into the display area.
That was followed with pounding in many dozen rebar and hanging hooks, which I still have a little more to do, followed by laying out several thousand feet of wiring, which I am about half done with at this point.
Interior on the rainy days I have been updating some of the display items that needed new lighting and/or wiring. Additionally, I have used that time to create 4 new house projection scenes, and in addition to the 4 new songs the display is sequenced to, I have upgraded some of the older songs (I have 48 in total now) with new effects using our newly added pixel display items.
So far, I have 3 full weeks into this year's setup, and if all goes well, I should have it ready to go in another 3 weeks.
I am excited for this year's display, as it will be the best that we have ever had!

Nativity Update

This was the year to update the mechanics of our life-sized animated nativity figures that we have in our display.

They were among the last of the Hamberger animations that were ever produced. There are a total of seven animations in the large nativity that my son-in-law, Aaron Bolles, and myself built.

While the figures are pristine and the motors themselves are working great, the linkages they had connecting the motors to the various moving parts of the figures were meant for a limited amount of time.

I had repaired one figure four years ago, but this year I needed to repair 3 more, two of which failed last season, and another of which was starting to fail at season's end.

I removed one figure at a time from the nativity and worked on it in the garage. Boy are those figures heavy to carry! Hamberger did a very good job in building the actual bodies, and the costumes. With the help of my good friend Brad Felz new linkages were created from thicker steel than what was initially installed in the figures, which should now last indefinitely!

Fortunately, Brad had a good supply of thicker steel and some commercial grade equipment to drill out what was needed to create the new links.

After two weeks of work on my end, the figures were repaired and re-installed in our nativity, now ready for this year's display!

2025 Display Initial Update

This will be our 45th year of consecutive holiday decorating at our current home. Adding to that the 3 years we decorated at our previous home in Buffalo, makes this year our 48th year of annual decorating! Time has really flown by.

A number of updates have been made this year given this is our 45th year here, including redoing some existing display items that regular visitors will appreciate.

New songs have been sequenced and will be in this year's display. Some old ones have been updated, incorporating the more recently added display elements which gives them a different look.

As folks who visited last year know our 40 year old "megatree" was replaced with a second pixel based tree, our "mega pixel tree". This one is supported by a 23 foot black pipe, allowing us to dispense with external guy wires (which made my wife very happy). It has held up well in 65 mph winds without any issues, based on how it was engineered.

I have two major things to focus on this year.

First, I need to overhaul and update our website (https://youngschristmas.com). I will need to add pictures of many of the display's items that were added over the 3 last years that I never got around to adding so folks will get an idea of all of the new additions. Some will have to be added after the upcoming season when I am able to get pictures of them when the display is operating.

Secondly, I will really have to get an actual video of our display in operation this year! Each year I say I will get a video, but I am working on getting things running and checked out, right up until its first night of operation. At that point I have run out of energy after the 6 weeks it takes to set up and test the display every year, and over the last 3 years have now also run out of time as "Bruce" our talking Spruce tree winds up carrying on conversations with many of our nightly visitors, which obviously has me tied up most night once the display starts.

Bruce has become a huge hit, especially with the children. Between his crazy tree and other jokes, he keeps them entertained! During our annual walk-in family night (the second Saturday of December from 6:30 - 8:00pm) when the North Pole characters arrive to greet the families he recently has added something completely unexpected during his conversations using some highly modified equipment, which really excites the children! You will have to join us on a family night to see what that is. That being said, it makes it harder to get the children to agree to leave once they experience it.

As soon as our website is updated I will re-enable the count down clocks to the first night of our 2025 display and our walk-in night.

More updates will follow as we get closer to the season.
